3.0 out of 5 stars Light reading for those familiar or unfamiliar with Latin, May 16, 2001
By Tim Drake "Author and Journalist" (Saint Joseph, Minnesota) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Carpe diem - Seize the day! Mortuo leoni, etiam lepores insultant - Rabbits may pull dead lions by the beard. Operi Dei nihil praeponatur - Let nothing be preferred to the Work of God.

This short, small book is filled with common and not-so-common Latin phrases perfect for meditation. Each phrase includes an English translation and is followed by a brief commentary on the saying.

Readers will particularly enjoy the lesser-known phrases, and the encouraging words of Saints Augustine and Thomas Aquinas.

In the process not only will you learn something about your faith, but you might also pick up a little Latin.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good book for those who practice lectio, July 15, 2002
By A Customer
What a FUN book...but also a useful one.

A fond introduction by the editor (a former student of the Archabbot's) leads you into pithy latin expressions which are then translated and followed by a light (very light but still insightful) meditation, and Reilly writes with a humble yet amusing style.

This is an extremely useful for those of us who practice lectio divina and who might be having some difficulty with it, as sometime happens with a discipline...a gentle way to get back to it. I highly recommend it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Lovely, Fun and Helpful little book, July 12, 2002
The author of this book, Archabbot Lambert Reilly, OSB, appears to be the soul of humility and he writes mediations that are light and yet provocative beneath some familiar and some unusual latin "sayings". My favorite, perhaps be cause it applies so well to me, "Profecto deliramus interdum senes" (The head grey, and no brains yet). If you're someone who wants something light and useful to read on a daily basis, but can't take the platitudes and sentimentality of some of the more popular "day to day" books, this one is for you. Thoughts on faith, hope, love, prudence, Justice and fortitude. It's well worth buying.
