Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Like Joel Rappelfeld's The Complete Blader ( LJ 6/1/92), this blading how-to book serves both novice and pro. The authors, both expert skaters, give thorough coverage to all aspects of blading, including such fundamentals as posture, stroke/glide motion, stopping, and turns. Handy drills are placed at the end of each skill section so that budding bladers can execute practices as needed. In Part III of the book, entitled "Advanced In-Line Skating," the authors give in-depth attention to activities that can be engaged in as proficiency grows: in-line racing, tricks and dance, and roller hockey. This well-written and easy to follow guide is recommended where blading is popular. Index, glossary, and illustrations not seen.

"""The second edition of In-Line Skating is the most comprehensive, updated guide to in-line skating yet. It reflects the diversity and changes that have occurred in the short life of in-line skating's existence and gives the recreational or beginning skater a taste of what's possible."""

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but not deep; doesn't always flow through concepts, July 9, 2000
By J. Hoopes (Costa Mesa, CA USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I'm new to inline skating and I'm looking for a book to get me started. My experience with ice skating and skiing is helping me. I'm looking for a book to, "take me to the next level."

This is a good book, but it isn't that.

There are some good pictures that show how to do certain maneuvers in time lapse. That helps. However, sometimes illustrations rather than pictures are the most effective means to get a concept across to the reader.

The written descriptions on how to do certain things, such as a Y-stop, are good, but not always thorough enough. It would help if the author would build up to certain tasks.

For example, the author might teach certain points about turning, which could then be used to form the foundation of a Y-stop.

Learning is about developing a foundation and building on that foundation. Too much in this book was independent of everything else I need to learn. I just didn't come away feeling that I had moved to the next level because of this book.

Don't get me wrong, I learned quite a bit. However, this book wasn't as thorough as I had hoped.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book for beginner skaters, October 11, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: In Line Skating (Paperback)
If you are enthusiastic about inline skating, you probably want to read everything about it you can get your hands on. I have read 3 or 4 books so far. I have learned at least something good-to-know from each one -- this one included. It's cheap enough -- order it and read it!
