Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal
Recently, former pro football player Lyle Alzado died of cancer attributed to the use of anabolic steroids. Yesalis (professor of health policy, administration, exercise and sports science, Penn State) has edited an objective, in-depth collection of articles that examine anabolic-androgenic steroids, their effects, and long-term medical prognosis of use. Journalists, researchers, and former athletes discuss steroids in sports and society and offer solutions to this problem engendered by a win-at-all-cost philosophy. Alarmingly, the trend of steroid abuse is not only prevalent among male bodybuilders and athletes such as Alzado, but also among women and teenagers as documented in this study. This book is timely and scholarly and will be a valuable addition to any library receiving requests for scientific exercise material.

Product Description
A recognised authority on drug abuse problems, Charles Yesalis presents new research findings on the use and abuse of steroids in sports and exercise. Contribution from respected researchers provide information on steroid use within professional sports and among Olympic athletes. In addition, new information on drug use among international student athletes, adolescents and body builders is explored. This second edition also examines the effects of steroid use on health, with special emphasis on women's problems associated with steroid abuse. The issue of drug dependency is discussed and descriptions of new and successful drug intervention programmes are presented. This book also examines the continuing political controversies surrounding drug testing issues and the positions adopted by certain countries with respect to drug use among their athletes.

5.0 out of 5 stars A comprehensive study of steroid history and research., January 12, 2002
This is an academic book ,which will appeal to the serious researcher ,in the subject of anabolic steroids. Dr. Charles Yesalis offers the research findings and opinions of steroid advocates and detractors in an unbiased scientific document.
The book includes chapters on drug testing, analysis of performance, health implications and the legal aspects of steroid
possession and distribution ,as well as a comprehensive history of steroids.
The author reveals the controversy of the subject, by introducing the aspect of law enforcement of these controlled drugs, whilst quoting the American Medical Associations view that steroids should not be scheduled and that "...steroids can be used safely."
The author shows that several decades of steroid research ,by the medical authorities, often reveals a lack of understanding of steroid dosing ,as applied effectively, by top competing athletes.
This is a book to be recommended to the sports coach, researcher and above all, to the medical and health educating specialists whose inadequate understanding of anabolic steroids is often fostered by myth and anecdote.

1.0 out of 5 stars More Techno-Geek Material, June 18, 2006
By HookerFan (NJ, USA) - See all my reviews
And who is this author? Yesalis? A "professor of health policy, administration, exercise and sports science at Penn State"? And he has put together what? An "objective, in-depth collection of articles that examine anabolic-androgenic steroids, their effects, and long-term medical prognosis of use". Whoopee. Sorry, but men looking for Steroid information aren't looking for this type of "data". Men looking for real informaton, information that they can use on Steroids or AAS are going to be wasting their money with this book. If you feel you must read it then hope you find it in a library and not waste your money. If you want information that you can use and from a Bro that you can trust, then check out Anthony Roberts book called Anabolic Steroids: Ultimate Research Guide. And it does mean ULTIMATE. And it is something that you can use and trust being from someone who has Been There and Done That.
