Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Burch (How To Build Fifty Classic Furniture Reproductions, Sterling, 1993) here details outdoor building projects that can be completed in no more than a single afternoon. For each project he lists recommended types of wood, complete materials lists, instructions, and user and environmental safety concerns. Users will find it helpful to read Burch's book first, for the instructions are not presented in a fashion that yields easily to process. Design templates are included, as are numerous illustrations, line drawings, photographs, and charts. The projects tend toward the utilitarian, which makes this guide more appropriate for the casual weekend woodworker than the more experienced woodworker. For large do-it-yourself collections.

From Booklist

More time spent in the backyard often means a desire to beautify that space. And a garden always seems to require one more trellis or even a romantic arbor. Burch offers numerous do-it-yourself projects and provides clearly detailed directions to help ensure success, with information on everything from the required tools and techniques to specific advice on different kinds of lumber for each task. There is even a drawing showing more than 20 types of nails and their correct nomenclature. Extremely simple designs include plant stands and a bean tower for the vegetable gardener. To motivate people with more expertise, a portable greenhouse or an around-the-tree bench may be just the ticket. There are plenty of projects here for anyone itching to construct something utilitarian for the outdoors. Alice Joyce
