Product Description
For tens of thousands of Christians over the last century, Charles Haddon Spurgeon's Morning and Evening has been a daily devotional guide through life's ups and downs. New generations can once again enjoy Spurgeon's beautiful prose and elegant command of the English language in this completely revised edition. Morning and Evening offers readers the best of Spurgeon's insight and wise counsel on themes that are as relevant to our day as they were in his day. In this updated version, Spurgeon's work is returned to its former brilliance while retaining the beautiful language of the original King James Version.

Special Features:
• Each day's devotions are presented on a two-page spread for complete ease of use.
• Each of the 732 devotions—one for every morning and evening of the year—provides inspiring meditations on portions of Scripture drawn from every book of the Bible.
• A new topical index helps readers discover Spurgeon's thoughts on various topics important to Christian life.
• An index of texts lets readers find what Spurgeon had to say about a particular Bible verse. Spurgeon has penned meditations, expressed simply but eloquently, that continue to draw readers to faith and obedience.

Though Spurgeon published thousands of sermons and many books, Morning and Evening remains by far his most popular work. --This text refers to the Hardcover edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Update of a Devotional Classic, April 16, 2004
By Kyle MacKenney (Washington DC) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Alistair Begg, pastor (Parkside Church in Cleveland, Ohio), author, and speaker, has done a magnificent job in updating this devotional classic. Begg's updates enable a wider audience to enjoy and be nourished by Spurgeon's timeless writing. Although this devotional (in its unrevised version) can be accessed daily on multiple websites, I have found myself to be more consistent in my reading when I hold a hard copy in my hands.

Spurgeon's pastoral warmth and thirst for evangelism come through strongly in these short devotionals. His focus on all three members of the Trinity is excellent as he beckons us further in serving Christ. I have also found his connection with the individual reader to be outstanding as he instructs and motivates toward change and action.

Granted, some of Spurgeon's interpretation may be dated (for instance, he interprets Song of Solomon as an allegory between Christ and the Church). However, this clearly is the minority, and the timeless nature of his topics far outweigh any problem this poses.

I have used this devotional off and on for many months now, and have many friends who have also been encouraged by their reading of it.

This 2003 edition is based on the English Standard Version (ESV), a recent translation respected for its readability and faithfulness to the text. Among the many Christian leaders who endorse the ESV are J.I. Packer (Regent College), Chuck Colson (Prison Fellowship Ministries), John Piper (Bethlehem Baptist Church), and R.C. Sproul (Ligonier Ministries).

5.0 out of 5 stars Spurgeon Wants You To Know His God, March 11, 2001
Charles Spurgeon was never too busy to consider the common people of his congregation during his day. In his majisterial "Treasury of David" commentary on Psalms, he included a "Notes for the Village Preacher" at the end of every study. In his "Lectures to my Students", we find him exhorting his students not to "over-preach" lest the widowed mother of seven children in the congregation will miss out the simple, wonderful message of God's lovingkindness. Here, in "Morning & Evening", we find a Spurgeon who speaks directly to the common Christians who long for a closer walk with God.

4.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful, thought-provoking readings, August 28, 2000
By A Customer
Spurgeon is the best! I never fail to find something to stir my heart in this book. I can't count the number of times the morning's entry has been just exactly what I needed to hear on that particular day. The readings are short, only about one page each, but rich and full of depth, providing insights that keep me thinking about my Lord and Savior throughout the day.
