5.0 out of 5 stars The best humor from the best humorist, June 28, 1999
By A Customer
If you're looking for nasty, biting humor, don't look here. Mr. Benchley's charm lay in his--dare I say--kinder and gentler humor. Unlike his colleague Mrs. Parker, he never insulted or hurt people; he made fun of himself and examined foibles we all share. What a sweet, funny man, and what a wonderful collection of his works.

5.0 out of 5 stars Benchley: Loveable grouch, satirist, social critic...and a fine humorist, April 4, 2007
By Gary Coffrin (San Jose, California, USA) - See all my reviews
Robert Benchley (1889-1945) was a hugely popular humorist, drama critic, and occasionally a film actor. All of the anthologies of Benchley's essays will give delight to readers having an interest in the social fabric of pre-1950 America. This collection of his sketches is funny and insightful of the times, including political and social issues of the era. It is worth reading, as are any of his earlier collection of humorous sketches, including 'Of All Things' (1921), 'From Bed to Worse' (1934), 'My Ten Years in a Quandary' (1936), 'Inside Benchley' (1941), and 'Benchley Beside Himself' (1943). Benchley was a loveable grouch, a satirist, and in insightful social critic...and a fine comedic actor. He was an American original whose work can delight with light humor and satire.
