Old friends revisited - I sure enjoyed it, August 6, 1998
These stories are as much a part of me as my beard. I first read them as a boy nearly fifty years ago, and they're as enjoyable today as then. When Amazon says a book is 'value-priced,' they ain't kidding. Not only do you get five for the price of one, but you also get to see the original illustrations from a time long past. That alone was worth the price of this book. Of course, younger readers won't get the nostalgia rush I did, but SF devotees should all read Burroughs; he was one of the giants who founded the genre.

Super Reader, February 4, 2009
Am omnibus of five books, two from the Pellucidar series, three from the Barsoom series.
Pellucidar
David the Emperor is back, and getting into trouble on the way - he is also getting a navy built, thanks to his his friend.
Gorilla-sheep people, lizard men, giant hyena dogs, and raising the technology level of the locals are all on the agenda. As well as a couple of rescues of Dian to go along with it. Plus canoeing and the odd minor war.
A bit bare bones, this book.
Thuvia, Maid Of Mars
Automatic pilots are a good invention, however, even if you are the son of the Warlord Of Mars, you should probably eyeball where you are going occasionally rather than snooze all the way.
As such, some underhanded sabotage leaves said young man on a quest to rescue a princess, and stop a war.
There's lost cities, invisible bowmen, large beasties, mentally created friends, swordfights to have, rivals to rescue, and big green guys to dispose of.
All the good stuff, in other words.
Tanar Of Pellucidar
David Innes is ruler of Pellucidar, but there is still opposition. This includes a large bunch of pirates. During the conflict, young Tanar is captured by said buccaneers.
They want to learn the secret of the new weapons technology that they are faced with, and young Tanar's force of warriors is equipped with.
So, it is time for a bit of escapology.

The Chessmen Of Mars
A slightly jealous Princess Of Mars stormy aviatrix skipout. Please return.
Which, when it seems that Tara of Helium is in trouble, the smitten young noble from Gathol rushes off to do.
The competent young Princess does ok for a while, but meets a strange race of basically, heads, that use headless bodies to get around.
Then, off to another isolated Martian region that likes to play nasty games of the local chess variety, having pieces duel to the death instead of just be taken.
Evil rulers, nasty old taxidermists, lost passages and rebellion are all to be found here.

The Mastermind Of Mars
Carter gets a compatriot.
Ulysses Paxton, a captain in the first world war is a big fan of the John Carter and Mars story, and really would prefer to be there, than in rat infested trenches. After his legs get blown off, he makes a desperate mental effort, and does end up alone on Mars.
Alone, a white boy, and in the clutches of a mad scientist whose specialty is the old brain transplant caper.
e.g. taking the old and wealthy and putting them in the bodies of the young and gorgeous.
He also needs an assistant, and a newly arrived earthman with no contacts, friends, or prospects, and of some native intelligence, is an ideal candidate.
Hard to stomach working for a mad scientist for long when there is a beautiful princess to save, though.
