FREDERICK R. GEHLBACH is a research professor of biology at Baylor University. He has authored more than one hundred scientific and popular articles and books, including Mountain Islands and Desert Seas: A Natural History of the U.S.-Mexican Borderlands, also published by Texas A&M University Press.
