Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Written with the goal of assisting non-Buddhists to experience something of the subtle beauty of the Bodhisattva Doctrine, this book explores the psychological meanings of the beliefs and practices of the Mahayana Buddhists, and the symbology of the exquisite temples and gardens of Japan. Illustrated. Index.

From the Publisher
The Philosophical Research Society is a nonprofit organization founded in 1934 for the purpose of assisting thoughtful persons to live more graciously and constructively in a confused and troubled world. The Society is entirely free from educational, political, or ecclesiastical control. Dedicated to an idealistic approach to the solution of human problems, the Society's program stresses the need for the integration of religion, philosophy, and the science of psychology into one system of instruction. The goal of this instruction is to enable the individual to develop a mature philosophy of life, to recognize his proper responsibilities and opportunities, and to understand and appreciate his place in the unfolding universal pattern.

5.0 out of 5 stars Japanese Gardens and Buddhism, July 5, 2000
By A Customer
Manly Hall introduces his readers to some of the Buddhist principles that form the foundation to many Japanese gardens. This book is an excellent reference useful to students before or after visiting the famous gardens in the Kyoto-Nara area of Japan. Once again Mr. Hall gently and with sensitivity demonstrates his incredible ability to extract in simple language the essence as well as subtleties of Buddhist thought and dynamics. In this instance using the famous Japanese gardens as his canvass he paints a landscape both pleasing and impelling. On a personal note having studied over one hundred of his works, "Buddhism and Psychotherapy" ranks as one of his most concise and mature labors.
