Product Description

Buddhism has permeated Japanese life and thought so deeply that knowledge of it is essential for a true understanding of any aspect of Japanese culture. This dictionary, with nearly five thousand entries on Buddhist terms, personal names, ceremonies, texts, and sects, will be of special interest to scholars and students of literature. Most entries have been drawn from such classics as Shasekishu Kokon chomonju, Hojoki, Makura no soshi, Tsurezure-gusa, Heike monogatari, and Taiheiki.

Hisao Inagaki received a PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, and is a professor at Ryukoku University in Kyoto.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great dictionary--a great find, February 17, 2006
By Shami Myokei (Houston, TX) - See all my reviews
I also have several Buddhist dictionaries. This one and Daito Shuppansha's "Japanese-English Buddhist Dictionary" (mighty expensive) are worth their weight in gold. Together these form a good resource for students of Japanese Buddhism. I found my copy at http://www.gatenby.id.au/bunshodo/gzt.htm for a very good price, IMHO (think graduate level textbooks!)--it's a 5th edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Japanese Buddhist Dictionary, October 19, 2000
By Lindsey Rubin (Mt. Baldy, California USA) - See all my reviews
I have several Buddhist dictionairies, including Shambhala's, Yuho Yokoi's, and Inagaki's Zen glossary, but this one was the most helpful. It was my absolute favorite. It simply had a lot of terms that could not be found elsewhere. Unfortunately I lost it through the mail! Now I'm looking for another copy, but it seems to be hard to find.

4.0 out of 5 stars I've seen a copy, September 3, 2005
This book loses a star due to its rarity and exorburant price whenever you do find it. Otherwise it is a true treasure for the serious student. Anyone in the Tokushima area of Japan can look at a copy in the international center above Tokushima station.
