Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Highly sought-after model of trains, second only to Lionel, by 30,000+ collectors who attend the largest train show in the U.S., held twice a year in Pennsylvania.

Is the ONLY full-color guide on the subject, serving the needs of toy train collectors who rely on detailed color photos to accurately identify trains.

A bargain buy when first introduced as "Chicago Flyer," American Flyer trains rose to premier toy train status in the last half of the 20th century, and maintain the second spot today! The company's claim to fame, the S gauge train, is supported by the wide gauge and prewar HO and O gauge trains, in collector popularity, and this one-of-a-kind guide covers all three groups in extensive detail. The most comprehensive overview of the American Flyer line, this book follows the winning format of the Standard Catalog line of toy train references.

About the Author
David Doyle is the author of the top-selling Standard Catalog of Lionel Trains, 1945-1969, Standard Catalog of Lionel Trains, 1900-1942, and other titles including O’Brien’s Collecting Toy Trains, 6th Ed. This former hobby store owner and life-long train collector is also at the helm of Krause Publication’s new Collector’s Guide toy train reference series.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Treasure for Lionel and Toy Train Enthusiasts, October 9, 2004
Just received the new Lionel Reference book by Dave Doyle. This is a treasure. The book has more information packed between the covers than most any other toy train reference book. Outstanding pictures (kudos to his son for the pics) compliment the detailed descriptions of each item and the respective variations.

The book is well thought out regarding how the different subjects are arranged. I highly recommend this book to anyone with an interest in Lionel trains.

My only regret is I did not find the pre-order form for the 1970-2004 edition ;)

Thanks David for a terrific addition to the LL (Licata Library).

5.0 out of 5 stars MOST COMPREHENSIVE YET, October 25, 2004
THIS IS A WONDERFUL BOOK FOR THE LIONEL COLLECTOR AND ENTHUSIAST!

MY ONLY CRITICISM IS THAT SOME OF THE MORE IMPORTANT AND CLASSIC MODELS WERE GIVEN ONLY TINY PHOTOGRAPHIC COVERAGE. FOR EXAMPLE, THE PHOTO OF THE 773 HUDSON IS ABOUT 1/2" X 1" WHERE OTHER LESS IMPORTANT MODELS ARE GIVEN 1/8 OF A PAGE.

OTHER THAN THAT, THE BOOK IS GREAT AND VERY ENJOYABLE TO THUMB THROUGH!

5.0 out of 5 stars Very good reference book for the Lionel train enthusiast., August 24, 2006
By L A. (NY USA) - See all my reviews
This book is a must have for both the serious collector and casual Lionel train fan alike. The book gives good background information for each segment of Lionel train (locomotives, flat cars, etc.) as well as insightful commentary on each train car model. The pictures are excellent but if you are looking for detailed information on the parts and assembly of the trains then this book will not help.

That said, the book is highly recommended for the Lionel fan who wants to see the full lineup of Lionel trains produced (post-war) and their approximate values.
