Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review
Latin Ladles is the second cookbook by Douglas Rodriguez, the U.S. chef who created the fusion style of food known as Nuevo Latino. This book offers soups and stews, which are at the heart of Latin home-style cooking, from Chile's Porotos con Riendas (Cranberry Bean and Pasta Soup) to Caldillo desede Panama, a broth with seafood, tomatoes, and oregano. Some dishes were collected from local cooks, others were inspired by Rodriguez's Cuban roots.

Standards for these big-flavored, hearty dishes and some of their ingredients are unfamiliar to most cooks, so it helps that the recipes are simple and clearly written. There is also some guidance for buying and handling yucca, malanga, posole, and more. Maricel Presilla's introduction is a literate essay on food in Latin America. Whimsical photos add mouth-watering color to the pages of this book, helping to inspire you to cook dishes from a cuisine still unfamiliar to many. --Dana Jacobi

4.0 out of 5 stars A great sequel to "Nuevo Latino", September 25, 2000
By A Customer
The perfect compliment to Douglas Rodriguez's "Nuevo Latino" book. This new book reintroduces us to the latin style of cooking present by Mr. Rodriguez. A must for those of us who enjoy and love soups. The extensive fare of soups and stews are hearty enough to be the main dish in any meal. The book provides an good introduction to the style and background to the cooking style. Each of the recipes is preceded by a short but highly interesting description of the dish and some of its ingredients. The instruction are simple and easy to follow.

If I have to point out a flaw, and I do find one, its the book's presentation. This book's content is so good why isn't the actual book so. "Nuevo Latino" is stunningly presented as a hard cover book but "Latin Ladles" is not, it is only available in paper back form. This is why I gave it 4 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Simple Recipes, January 27, 2007
By Hannah's Mommy (Burkeville, VA USA) - See all my reviews
This is an excellent cookbook. The soups/stews are hearty and can make a meal all by themselves. I especially like this cookbook because I have most of the ingredients in the pantry and I can make these soups on days that I have been busy and don't have time to go to the grocery store or for a long involved meal. The flavors are wonderful and the recipes adapt well to personal tastes.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sugar, Spice and Everything Nice, September 2, 2003
By A Customer
I'm not a fan of most cookbooks, but Latin Ladles scores big points. The descriptions are entertaining but concise, the ingredients are well explained and the directions are thorough. The soups are more like meals and preparation is a big part of most recipes. If you're looking for unique recipes with complex flavors you've come to the right cookbook. Oh, I love soft-backed books and that makes this book a 5 for me.
