"...clearly written and well organized....refreshingly clear and detailed in explaining how to use the client manual....the clinician's guide is one of the most culturally sensitive cognitive therapy text I have read....at the end of each chapter there is a "troubleshooting guide" that provides useful information for therapists experiencing an impasse in therapy....the last chapter discusses using the guide and manual in cognitive therapy training. As an educator, I have used and recommended these resources to my students counseling from a cognitive therapy perspective. They have been very useful in teaching therapists-in-training how to move from theoretical understanding to practical application....I highly recommend the Mind Over Mood clinician's guide and client manual. They are welcome additions to the cognitive therapy treatment and training literature." --Journal of Cognitive Psychotherapy
"This book shares with its predecessor the virtues of being effectively organized, easy to understand and written with the therapist in mind....I have to admit that my first impression of the guide was to view it as a sort of Cliff's notes for the client treatment manual. However, as I read through it I found that it was filled with many helpful ideas for working with patients at times when the implementation of cognitive strategies might prove challenging....Each issue is discussed in some length and clinical transcripts are offered to illustrate ways of framing a response in situations where these issues arise. Armed with these insights, the clinician is in a better position to anticipate and respond to these potential obstacles....It is very easy to recommend the Clinician's Guide to Mind over Mood. My sense is that therapists whose clients are using the treatment manual will find it useful in a number of ways. By enabling both members of the treatment dyad to 'be on the same page', use of this guide can also enhance the collaborative and relational aspects of the treatment." --International Cognitive Therapy Newsletter -- Review

"In Mind Over Mood, Greenberger and Padesky produced an absolutely first-rate guide for patients who wanted to learn about cognitive therapy and how to use it to deal with their problems. In Clinician's Guide to Mind Over Mood, the authors have provided an invaluable guide for the clinician to accompany their patient workbook. The guide is clear, concise, and filled with clinical wisdom. It should prove to be a valuable resource for anyone who wants to work with other people and reflects the kind of creativity that keeps cognitive therapy vital and fresh as it matures as a discipline." --Steve Hollon, Ph.D., Vanderbilt University

What makes this book so useful is that it assists the therapist in effectively guiding the client as s/he follows the workbook in dealing with his/her mood disorder. It shows how best to employ the workbook in therapy, help the client set goals, and individualize the exercises. It demonstrates its application not only to individuals but also to groups, brief therapy, and inpatient settings. Under each situational category, it provides a session by session description of the book's integration with therapy. What many therapists may find a boon are sample client-therapist dialogues, tips on engaging clients and maintaining collaboration, troubleshooting guides, and assignment reminders. Because of its flexibility, this cognitive program can be tailored to a range of diagnoses.
I was so excited to get this book and then realized it was really advertising for the book clients are to use. If you flip through this book you will see on each page the authors site their book SO MANY TIMES.... we are educated people and they can't stop citing the book we are reading. Not very helpful sadly.
As a clinical social worker and marriage and family therapist, I have found that there is a certain portion of my client population that responds best to cognitive behavioral therapy. Mind Over Mood: Change How You Feel by Changing the Way You Think is the best client resource I have found in terms of its clarity, efficacy and outcome. The Clinician's handbook is excellent.
I recommend the Clinician's handbook only for seasoned therapists, not for clients. I took a course with one of the authors before I even tried using the handbook. Additionally, I had been utilizing CBT for more than a decade. I think that clients who try to use the Clinician's Guide on their own will find it frustrating. It is best to do this work with a trained therapist.
