Editorial Reviews

Product Description
The arts have an essential place in education whatever the social and economic circumstances of the day. However, we are now faced with a new world with new attitudes towards social relations, employment, work and non-work. These raise fundamental questions about the purposes of schooling, about the balance of the curriculum and about the whole character of education in Britain. The recent major reports and statements which have been issued by the Secretaries of State, HMI and the Schools Council, for one reason or another, have included only brief references to the arts. It would be a serious matter if this were to lead to arts being given low priorities in schools, now or in the future. This book argues the case for the arts in schools and considers the consequent implications and conclusions. Our conviction is that schools must develop broader not narrower curricula and that the arts have an important place within this approach. '. it should be not merely placed but forced into the hands of all heads, governors and administrators . The book bristles with practical organisational suggestions...' Times Educational Supplement

4.0 out of 5 stars Research Synopsis, really., February 18, 2008
By LetsReason "Robert" (US Army in Korea) - See all my reviews
I appreciate the book and the research it represents in a real way: I am a musician and a music teacher in an elementary school. The book is basically an explanation of the research that is available about the importance of the Arts in education.

Most of the summary concerns a specific study centered around Britain but mirrors the US approach closely. IF you are someone looking to read about reasons why the Arts in education are important, I think this book is worth the purchase price.

It is NOT written as a narrative so you kind of have to jump around to find the things you are fighting for specifically, but certainly a VERY welcome addition to the literature supporting creativity and the Arts in schools.

5.0 out of 5 stars Important Ideas We Have Thrown Away, January 6, 2009
By Firenze 1966 "Circeissa" (The Art Lover's Cave, MA) - See all my reviews
Sir Ken Robinson, in this important early report in the UK, focuses on the importance of arts in the school curriculum. In our mad rush to high-stakes testing in the US, we have lost the third language, tha language of performance. Literacy and numeracy are only two of three essential human languages. We ignore the arts at our and our children's peril.
