Editorial Reviews

From The Washington Post

"...comes as close as possible to changing the treatment of asthma from a mysterious illness guarded over by priest-like physicians dispensing magic potions to a condition that parents can treat (for the most part) condfidently at home..."

Review

Asthma can be a frustrating, disruptive, and frightening condition, especially in children. But with the help of this wonderful aid, families can learn to manage symptoms and gain control. The need for parents, child and physician to function as a management team is the keyston of Plaut's approach. He explains causes, complications, and intevention strategies in a clear, jargon-free manner. -- Medical Self Care December 1988

No one, no book, was more helpful to me.and school. -- Mindy Bucek, Houston Texas

5.0 out of 5 stars Always-at-my-side guide for understanding asthma, January 15, 1999
By A Customer
This book was recommended highly by our pediatrician and then again by our allergist. As a parent of an 8-yr old girl just diagnosed with asthma, this book has had invaluable information on understanding severity of symptoms, how to respond, medications and environment. We learned that parental and patient education is key to controlling asthma, and this book was a strong step in that direction. I've read ALL the books now, and this one reigns the best, most complete and reassuring that I've seen. We also recommend it to doctors!

5.0 out of 5 stars Life Saver, June 26, 2000
By PamelaVoight (Sacramento, CA United States) - See all my reviews
I came across Plaut's book in the aftermath of my 9 year old son's first and life threatening asthma episode just 6 weeks ago. Since then my son's condition has been stabilized with some wonderful medical help. But nothing has been better in understanding the disease, the treatment, and the myriad of medications recommended for it, than Tom Plaut's book. It is now my asthma bible. No one affected by asmtha in any way should miss it!

5.0 out of 5 stars The most educational/helpful book on Asthma that I have seen, September 2, 1998
By A Customer
Dr. Plaut educates you so you can help your child, rather than be afraid of the asthma. The information he gives you helps you recognize an asthma episode before it becomes critical, as early intervention is crucial to helping your child live as normal live as possible. You also finish the book with enough knowledge that you will not be intimidated by the doctor, and you will no longer leave the doctor's office confused. You will be in control of the asthma, rather than having the asthma controling you!
