Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Somewhere in this book is the perfect monolog or dialog for your audition. Short cuttings from some of the very best scenes in theatre yesterday and today. All selections are by leading international playwrights: Pinter, Goldsmith, Ionesco, Mamet and many more. Powerful moments. Some soft and quiet. Others strident and commanding. The choices are many. The book explains how to find the right audition monolog for your voice, your face, your style, your stage persona. Valuable tips on how to develop your audition monolog for performance and how to build a systematic file of scenes for your personal working repertoire.

From School Library Journal

YA-- A welcome addition to the field because it includes scenes from scripts produced after 1975, as well as selections from classical plays such as The Beggar's Opera, The Country Wife, She Stoops to Conqueror, and The Importance of Being Earnest . The selections are for characters aged 18 to 30; several have been written for African-American and Hispanic actors. The book is organized in sections: "Monologues for Women," "Monologues for Men," "Dialogues for One Man and One Woman," "Dialogues for Two Men," and "Dialogues for Two Women." The introduction includes a helpful essay that discusses how an aspiring actor can build a repertoire.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Little Bit of Everything!, March 27, 2000
By A Customer
I purchased this book as a resource for my high school duo and solo acting competitions. I am very impressed by the variety of scenes in this book. There are wonderful duo scenes for one man and one woman, (Be sure to read David Rimmer's "Album"), and also great scenes for two women (My partner and I recieved 3rd place in the duo competition for our interpretation from Beth Henley's "The Miss Firecracker Contest") Authors range from Oscar Wilde to August Wilson, John Gay to David Mamet... This book is an excellent resource. My only complaint is in the book's organization. Monologues and scenes are separated, but comedies and tragedies are mixed up. This adds an extra step in the choosing process, but all in all it's worth it!
