Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Make your audition impressive with any of these contemporary scenes from today's theatre world. Though there are many fine scenes in use from the theatre classics, choosing fresh material as featured in this book makes you seem on the cutting edge of what's happening in theatre. Forty-two selections from 38 of the best new plays, culled from around the country, address major trends and conflicts through revealing glimpses of society as we know it. Scenes are varied in tone and content, with humor, pathos, reflection, poignancy, angst, and other qualities for dramatic expression. Included are the works of 32 contemporary American playwrights, including stellar new names like Mark Medoff, Wendy Hammond, David Henry Hwang, and Chiam Potok. Scenes are short for auditioning ease - no longer than ten minutes. A must for every auditioning actor, theatre student, or drama aficionado.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for teachers, not so much for serious actors, October 3, 2008
I use these books for my classes for beginning acting students to find performance and mock audition pieces. This is also a good resource to find out which full length plays may be worth reading. These are much better than those "just written as a free-standing piece" books because they are pulled from actual plays.

I would warn that serious actors shy away from these when looking for audition pieces because you run the risk of :showing up to the party in the same dress".
