Vicki Lansky has written over twenty books and many, many more magazine articles about parents and children and child care. Her new book, a flimsy little paperback called A New Baby at KoKo Bear's House, is an illustrated story for parents and very young children who are expecting a new sibling. Everything about this book is pat, from the predictable story of KoKo's experiences during the pregnancy, birth and homecoming, to the uninspired illustrations, to the advice for parents which is displayed at the bottom of each page ("You can skim these silently while you and your child read about KoKo," Lansky says in her introduction). I found this format - kids' book on top, parents' book on bottom - gimmicky. As a mother in this situation I would much prefer to read a book with my child without distraction, and give an adult book the time it deserves. There is nothing objectionable about the advice or storyline (with the exception of the "coincidence" of KoKo Bear receiving a T-shirt that says, "I'm the BIG Bear," and an order blank on the end page for "I'm the BIG Brother/Sister" Tshirts for $15). But one hopes for more from somebody who has so much child care prose under her belt. Sometimes simplicity is a virtue; in this case it's a bore. -- From Independent Publisher

This is a terrific book to help prepare children for their baby brothers or sisters. I have a 4 year old son and another child on the way and my son has enjoyed reading A New Baby at Koko Bear's House with me. It has elicited questions on my son's part and allowed us to discuss issues further. It covers several different topics including mom and dad going to the hospital and the fact that the baby isn't an instant playmate. In addition, the illustrations are very appealing to young children. As an extra bonus for the parents, the author includes many helpful hints (on the bottom of each page) to help make your older child's transition easier.

Good book to introduce the concept of a new baby coming to the house to another sibling. Helpful guidelines at the bottom the pages for parents to guide the siblings in this transition. It would of been nice if the book had more pages.
