Editorial Reviews

Product Description
This book provides an authentic window into life on the Flathead Indian Reservation and pre-reservation Salish history - and particularly the Salish relationship to the buffalo - through oral interviews conducted in the 1920s and 1930s and preserved by the Montana Writers Project. The story of the Salish's relationship to the buffalo - including their role in protecting the species - is preserved in this collection, which includes all extant interviews from the Montana Writers Project conducted on the Flathead Reservation. These firsthand accounts of Salish elders - legends, information about traditional lifeways, biographies of important figures on the reservation, and most of all buffalo - offers a glimpse into tribal life as it was lived in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. (6 x 9, 288 pages, illustrations)

5.0 out of 5 stars Insight into the interrelationship of human beings & nature, June 8, 2002
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
Deftly edited by Robert Bigart, "I Will Be Meat For My Salish": The Montana Writers Project And The Buffalo Of The Flathead Indian Reservation is the compiled saga of the relationship of the Native American Salish people to the buffalo, including their dependence on it for survival in prehistory and their role in preserving the species today. Individual chapters include buffalo-related legends and history, the management of buffalo herds on the Flathead reservation today, Salish biographies, and much more. An amazing insight into the interrelationship of human beings and nature, "I Will Be Meat For My Salish" is a strongly recommended addition to Native American Studies supplemental reading lists and reference collections.
