Review
A much-needed and long-awaited reference source on Latin American art. The essential book...should be on everybody's shelf. -- Juan Varez, Director Christie's Latin American Paintings Department
After careful review I believe Leonard's Price Index of Latin American Art at Auction is a "must have" reference book for institutions, scholars, dealers and collectors of Latin American art. Its plethora of auction prices spanning over 35 years of sale results, its extensive number of artists' biographies in English, and its comprehensive appendices are sufficient to highly recommend this first-rate price index of Latin American art. In addition, the three scholarly essays by Dr. Alejandro Anreus, Mary-Anne Martin, and August Uribe, as well as the many entertaining essays covering a wide range of relevant subjects to this specialized field puts this price index over the top. I also enjoyed the superb quality of the publication. Congratulations for putting together an invaluable resource book for auction, biographical, and miscellaneous information on Latin American art -- Juan A. Martinez, Ph.D.; Associate Professor, Art History; Florida International University; Miami, Florida
Highly recommended ... a compilation of information that's essential... an excellent reference source for any collector or scholar of Latin American Art. -- Isabella Hutchinson, Director Sotheby's Latin American Art Department
Leonard's Price Index of Latin American Art at Auction is an invaluable guide to an important but underrated world. Anyone interested in Latin American art should read it. -- Milton Esterow, Editor & Publisher, ARTnews magazine
Leonard's Price Index of Latin American Art at Auction is an invaluable guide to the current and recent market for Latin Am. art. It combines brief but serious essays on some of the essential qualities of the art from Latin America (sensitive readings of this often-confusing territory) and then leads the user through the complicated area of recent sales. I think that Leonard's Price Index - much more than a simple set of economic guidelines - will be of serious use and interest to the casual collector, the serious buyer, dealers and scholars as well. Scholarly attention has been turned to the changes and transformations of the art market in all areas and this book will provide a wealth of information on many levels. -- Dr. Edward J. Sullivan; Chairman, Dept of Fine Arts, New York University
Susan Theran's Leonard's Price Index of Latin American Art at Auction is an important addition for any library, collector or dealer interested in the field.
Following the format of previous Leonard's auction index publications, this volume is enriched with several new features. Of exceptional value is the section on Artists' Biographies. This includes information on artist's lives, training and careers never before published in English. Gathered from new publications in Spanish, Portuguese and English, descriptions for over 1100 artists are included, establishing the work as both an essential price index and specialized biographical dictionary.
Other important features including auction sales organized by year, a nationality index and bibliography enhance this volume and increase its value as a reference tool. Lastly, Ms. Theran has defined "Latin American Art" in a broad manner. By including artists born in South
America, Central America and the Caribbean as well as artists from other countries whose subject matter is Latin America provides the reader with an extremely wide and comprehensive listing that dates back 35 years and includes over 30,000 auction prices.
This is a highly valuable reference tool whose timely publication corresponds to a growing interest in and demand for Latin American art. -- Lee Robinson; Librarian, Art & Architecture; The New York Public Library, The Research Libraries
Susan Theran's new Leonard's Price Index of Latin American Art at Auction is an invaluable resource for both auction and biographical information.
The nearly one hundred double-columned pages of detailed biographical entries offer unique information to complement the section of nearly 400 double-columned pages of auction information.
Exhibiting the same high standards of the other Leonard's paper and electronic auction indexes, this specialized resource appears just at the time when Latin American art is burgeoning in the art market place. The auction index pages are interspersed with nearly 70 small essays, each illustrated with a black and white image of a work of art, on a wide and rich variety of subjects, such as conservation, iconography, groups of artists (e.g., Orozco, Siqueiros, and Rivera), accuracy printed birth and death information, dealers, the market place, discoveries, media (e.g., gouache), etc.
This superb publication is enhanced by Appendices such as a Nationality Index, Auction House Addresses, Sales Dates Cited arranged by auction house, Auction Vocabulary, a fine Select Bibliography, Indexing Guidelines, and List of Illustrations. The book is introduced by a series of scholarly essays on the coming of age of this specialized market, a survey 20th Century Latin American art, and Latin American art at auction. This timely and well-produced publication will be of interest to libraries, collectors, dealers, museums, and auction houses. -- Jeffrey Weidman; Associate Librarian for Access Services andCollection Development - Chair, Research Committee, ARLIS/NA; Spencer Art Reference Library, Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art; Kansas City, Missouri
