Editorial Reviews

Product Description
This groundbreaking book illustrates how the internet and other electronic resources are currently affecting social work practice. The authors show how technology affects social work practice directly through new methods and indirectly by affecting the communities that practitioners serve. It provides channels for e-advocacy as well as a thorough exploration of the major theoretical, practice, and research perspectives that inform electronic activism. This book solidly integrates new on-line advocacy skills with traditional methods and unites research on internet communities with macro social work theory.

About the Author
Steven Hick is an associate professor in the School of Social Work at Carleton University. His published books include Land Our Life: a Study of the Struggle for Agrarian Reform in the Philippines (1987), Human rights and the Internet (2000), and Social Work in Canada: An Introduction (2002).

John G. McNutt (PhD, University of Tennessee; MSW, University of Alabama) is professor of social work at the University of Delaware. His research program looks at the use of Internet technology in social change and technology use by nonprofit organizations. He has coauthored and coedited four books and has published and presented widely on advocacy, technology, and nonprofit organizations. He is also the moderator for the Nonprofit Informatics Research Group and the Electronic Advocacy Group.

5.0 out of 5 stars At last! Internet Advocacy Revealed, January 6, 2003
By Havi Echenberg (Ottawa, Ontario Canada) - See all my reviews
Despite its social work bent, this book is a winner for everyone interesting in using the 'Net to influence public opinion and/or public policy. It combines case examples, theory, and enthusiasm to describe, analyze and prescribe (in limited quantity) how those interested in social change can harness the power of 'Net to accomplish their goals. As the first work of its kind, the book captures a lot of wisdom, experience and analysis about how and why the 'Net is an appropriate vehicle, its limitations, and its power in advocating for social change. Practitioners and scholars will find this book extremely useful.
