Editorial Reviews

Review

"The new editor is to be congratulated for preserving and enhancing the fine balance between popular intention and scholarly care struck by his predecessor." -- Small Press, Fall 1986

"The story of Petrarch's relationship to Rome and to Avignon, of his understanding of the past and the present, and of his vision of the future. A useful survey of the latest research on Cola and Petrarch and on Rome and Avignon in the fourteenth century." -- Speculum, October 1988

Product Description

This book tells the story of the relationship between Cola di Rienzo, a young visionary with a gift for oratory who overthrew the rule of the barons and the pope, and Francesco Petrarch, the poet and Renaissance humanist. Using Petrarch's letters to and about the Roman tribune, it traces his friendship from their first encounter in Avignon in 1343 and the poet's enthusiastic embrace of Cola's revolution in 1347, through his growing doubts and first criticisms, to his bitter disappointment at Cola's fall.

Third edition with revised introduction, bibliography, map, notes and index.
