Editorial Reviews

Product Description

Carmel is known above all for her priceless heritage of spirituality. For centuries, in the spirit of Elijah and the ancient prophets, Carmelites have sought to encounter the living God and to teach others the ways of prayer. In sixteenth-century Spain, Saint Teresa of Avila brought renewed vitality to this religious family by inaugurating a reform movement that became known as the Discalced Carmelites, a new and fruitful branch on an ancient vine. This book was first publish in English in 1959 and provides a concise and inspiriing overview of Carmel's spiritual heritage from a Teresian perspective. Renowned Discalced Carmelite author Paul-Marie of the Cross identifies the principal texts, themes, figures and teaching of Carmel: Elijah and Mary, the Rule of St. Albert and the Book of the Institution of the First Monks, The Carmelite understanding of contemplation and the degrees of prayer, the message of Saints Teresa, John of the Cross, and Therese of Lisieux. This classic essay, long out of print, is here updated and reprinted for a new generation of seekers longing to slake their spiritual thirst at the fount of Carmel

5.0 out of 5 stars The History of the Spirituality of the Discalced Carmelites, April 9, 2002
By A Customer
This book discusses the ancient beginnings of Carmel with Elijah, the prophet; what makes Carmel different from other spiritual traditions; the various aspects of the rule of Carmel; three primarily known Carmelites, St. Teresa, St. John of the Cross, and St. Therese; and finally the various forms of Carmelite prayer and meditation. An excellent overview.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent resource, July 30, 2008
This book was originally published in 1959 and provides a fine overview of Carmel's spiritual heritage from a Teresian perspective, as the back cover states. The topics range from a discussion of Elijah, the primacy of the contemplative spirit, the spirituality of the rule of Carmel, dependence on Jesus, and the models of carmel (Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Therese of Lisieux).

Not only is this small book informative, it is also prayerful and a pleasure to read. I am very sad that (at the time I'm writing this review) it appears to be unavailable new (and used at a very high price). I do know that one can purchase it in Europe still and hope that the publishers will make it available here in the USA also.
