Editorial Reviews

Product Description
Baxter Black, cowboy poet and former large animal veterinarian, has just published his latest collection of tall tales and poems about the real life of cowboys in the 21st century. He's at his best, draggin' cowboys in and out of technicolor wrecks as you laugh and cringe along. A life time in the wonderous world of cows, ranches, rodeos, sheepherders, stockdogs, team ropers, feedlots, horseshoers, veterinarians, cowboys and women wearing chaps has given Dr. Black an enormous palette upon which to paint his version of the romance and potholes that make bein' a cowboy today the source of such great incredulity and inspiration!

Hardcover * 128 pages * Illustrated

From the Author
Welcome to another guided tour of my world. As I travel back and forth across the country I pick up your stories like a horsetail picks up cockle burrs!

I repeat often that "I don't have to make this stuff up!" The truth underlying these stories is their appeal. It's the truth in humor that makes it funny (that's why there's no science fiction jokes). "That happened to me!" I hear said over and over.

How many different ways can a cowboy or rancher or farmer or veterinarian get bucked off, bit, stomped, run over, butted, stepped on, spit on, pooped on, gored, pummeled, pounded, dragged, snagged, flogged, bogged, plowed down, kicked up, pitched off, bowled over, punched out, scraped, lacerated, lamed, lumped, bumped, flattened, rolled, hammered, humped and humiliated? The answer: Apparently more than the number of stars in the sky!

How I wound up making a living entertaining the agricultural masses is still a mystery to me. I don't think about it except to appreciate my good fortune and to not take those of you who like my stuff for granted.

Many thanks once again, to the Bucarangelos; Buckaroo/Michelangelos, whose illustrations make my book eminently more enjoyable. Without them I'd just be another Homer without The Odyssey, Pablo without the Picasso, or Lemon without the Meringue! And one last thank you to you wonderful folks that keep me from needing to find honest work! I couldn't do it without you.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get My Horse will ya!, November 14, 2008
Oh My Goodness! I love reading Blackies Books, but this one has about done me in. I generally use his books kinda like the old Sears and Roebuck catalogs only don't tear the pages out if you get my drift. But Blazin' Bloats and Cows on Fire has about give me another heart attack laughing so hard. With fifty some odd years behind a tarnished belt buckle, I swear he's had someone watchin us to tell his stories. I can put a face and a place to just about every cow puncher, fence jumper, rope breaker and emergency room he's put in this book. Many of them MINE!
It is said that God only allows so many people to be cattlemen. I think he allows even fewer to understand them to the point to tell their story in halarious funeral parlor humor. That is to say that if Mr. baxter where attending my funeral, I'd be real upset if he didn't stand close to the box when he was tellin a yarn so I didn't go to my rewards with a smile on my face.
This is a darned well 'better read' or it's your loss. It is pure bahind the barn Americana at it's very best! If this don't take your aspiration to be a cowboy away, you just might be in the wrong occupation!
This is some good stuff!
