Editorial Reviews

Review

"Breathing is suitable for even the most novice beginner. The author does a good job of explaining how breathing affects the body in general, and in various associated aspects, in more detail. Of particular interest are the rebirthing and sexual energies sections." (
Dr. Tami Brady, TCM Reviews, Sep 2008

Product Description

Long used by meditators as a way to inner peace, health, and vitality, intentional breathing can also be used as a calming technique when encountering stress, pain, and fear. In Breathing, Michael Sky offers simple breathing exercises that are intended to be experienced as they are read. He discusses breath, the central organizing life force, as it relates to emotional responses, lifetime habits, sleep, childbirth, sexual communion, and higher consciousness.

5.0 out of 5 stars Probably my favorite "Rebirthing" book. Michael is a master., June 5, 1998
By A Customer
"Rebirthing" is an artform that many aspire to and few attain. Michael's book captures both the spiritual as well as the practical aspects of many facets of the breath and breathing. He is quite poetic as well. A must buy for anyone interested in transformational breathwork and the study of the breath.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breathing, November 7, 2008
Breathing, it's involuntary. Much of the time, we aren't even aware of the process. Yet, our breathing patterns do change. When we are calm and relaxed our breathing is deeper. When we are upset or in pain, we take shallow breathes. Often, without realizing it, we take on these patterns long after the trauma is gone.

Breathing looks to do two things. First and foremost, the reader is encouraged to become aware of his or her breathing through various exercises. As this awareness increases, the reader learns how breathing can be used as a tool for self understanding and ultimately healing trauma such as that occurring during the birthing process.

Breathing is suitable for even the most novice beginner. The author does a good job of explaining how breathing affects the body in general and it various associated aspects in more detail. Of particular interest are the rebirthing and sexual energies sections.

2.0 out of 5 stars Of little value, February 15, 2009
This book pretends that if you consciously control the way you breathe it will give you all kinds of benefits. It's a bunch of baloney. It's a hippie dippie book from the 80s.

Okay now breathe in through your nose, hold it four seconds, then let it all out through your nose, then do it again. There, now all your problems are gone.

All of your problems are caused by the way you contracted and withheld your healthy deep breaths. When your Uncle Jay sexually abused you, you restricted your breathing in order to avoid experiencing what was happening. Now you must take good deep breaths and release that experience, and you will be whole again.

The part of the book that I responded most positively to was when birth was described. It was from the point of view of the newborn baby, and it said that the baby does have feelings and reactions, and is upset, and shouldn't be handled clinically by people wearing masks, shouldn't have its umbilical cord cut so soon to the point where it becomes a terrifying matter of life and death to force air into its lungs before it is ready, and shouldn't be separated from mommy at this time.
