About the Author
Vivian Younger is a generalist vocational counselor for the California State Department of Rehabilitation in San Jose. Although she now counsels people of all disabilities, she has specialized in working with the blind as a teacher/counselor. Younger has experienced a progressive sight loss all her life. She is an active member of the disabled community and has served on the Santa Clara County Commission on the Status of Women, the Disability Advisory Committee for the City of San Jose, the Santa Clara County Commission for the Developmentally Disabled, and the Board of Directors for the Santa Clara County Blind Center. Younger was co-chairwoman for the Conference for Women with Disabilities for four years and was the recipient of the Santa Clara County Woman of Achievement Award for 1980. Younger is the former director of the "Take a Giant Step" program. A recreation, education, and social program for visually impaired children, and has presented seminars on disabilities and Black history. During her college years, Younger was honored as a Dean's Scholar and was selected for inclusion in 'Who's Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.' She holds a B.A. degree in liberal studies and an M.A. degree in public administration. Younger lives in San Jose. Jill Sardegna is a freelance writer and author of The Encyclopedia of Blindness and Vision Impairment and K Is for Kiss Good Night. Sardegna is also a playwright. Her two-act play Specs features a blind protagonist and was chosen by the Disabled Students Theater Group of California State University at Northridge for production in June 1990. Sardegna is a former teacher and exhibit developer for the Children's Discovery Museum of San Jose, where she developed the traveling exhibit, "One Way or Another", a hands-on exhibit designed to teach children about disabilities. She has served as the Materials Director for the Conference for Women with Disabilities and has written articles about disabilities and children's fears concerning disabilities. Sardegna received her B.A. degree in liberal studies and her M.A. degree in instructional technology. She lives in San Jose with her husband and daughter.
