Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

This hour of intensive lessons from veteran ski instructor Lito Tejada-Flores puts the focus on two areas feared by many intermediate skiers: skiing over bumps and in heavy powder. Tejada-Flores begins with some words to build confidence, stating that "mastering bumps" can be done if some fundamental skills are learned and practiced, and with careful study "you can ski bumps better than you ever imagined." After a quick review of some principles covered in the first tape of this program, Tejada-Flores begins showing films of skiers practicing "bump turns," as the principles of turning are central to safely navigating bumps. The films are shot very well, with occasional graphic overlays demonstrating the "exit lines" a skier can choose when traversing a bump. There is even some footage of a skier making obvious mistakes, so the student can learn from his bad example. The section of skiing powder begins with Tejada-Flores noting that one must visualize skiing "inside the snow" rather than on top of it, and all the basics of turning in deep powder are covered in a series of detailed lessons. It goes without saying that considerable practice following the viewing of these tapes would be required to fully develop the skills shown, but the lessons on the tape are very detailed and would provide a great foundation for learning. Also included is a booklet that essentially duplicates the information on the video. --Robert J. McNamara

Product Description

Welcome to Breakthrough on Skis II - Bumps & Powder Simplified. Three years ago when I made the first Breakthrough on Skis videotape, I really didn't know whether a video ski lesson was such a good idea, whether it world work. That first tape was an experiment but, as it turned out, a successful one. And this is the video ski lesson I have been thinking about ever since.

Bumps and powder are two very important sub words of modern skiing, of expert skiing, for two very different reasons. Bump skiing seems like a nagging challenge to many skiers--awkward, difficult, frustrating, and not very graceful, though often all too exciting. Bump skiing is an important part of expert skiing simply because it is so hard. This tape should make bump skiing a lot less difficult, but I promise it will remain just as exciting. Powder is different. To be honest, powder snow is not a serious athletic challenge--at least it shouldn't be. There are days when skiing perfect powder feels almost like an out-of-body experience. Sublime.

Together, bumps and powder are something like the frosting on the cake of expert skiing. Together they represent the final step along the path we began with the first Breakthrough on Skis tape; the direct path from intermediate to expert skiing. This has been my most stimulating and challenging assignment as a ski teacher. Bu I'm sharing this lesson with my most motivated students. Buying this video and working with it is an act of commitment--and that's exactly what it takes to master bumps and powder. The payoff, the freedom to ski all snow, all terrain, is even better than you might have imagined.

I'm sure you've already looked at the tape before pulling this small booklet out of its sleeve and opening it. You already know the program, the steps I've laid out in as clear a path as possible to get you into these special worlds of bump and powder skiing. So why this booklet?

This is just another tool. Another set of reminders. A few more pointers. A chance for me to reinforce, one for time, those few key ideas and skills that are going to make bump and powder skiing easier and much more pleasant for you.

5.0 out of 5 stars breakthrough on bumps too!!!, August 3, 2000

This video is a great expansion on how to ski the bumps. Lito is a gifted instructor and the video actually shows you how to ski the bumps, as opposed to most ski instructors who just tell you to "do what I do" when you can't tell the subtle things they are doing to be successful.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unsurpassed Attention to detail, March 24, 2001
By Vincent Valentine (Los Angeles, CA) - See all my reviews
I have watched many videos focused on moguls. I have never seen such a detailed analysis of skiing bumps. Because of that, this video is not only suitible for the intermediate bump skiing. Even expert bump skiers will gain a new perspective on how to tackle moguls.

However, even though Lito goes into more detail about mogul skiing then almost all other instructional videos on moguls, I don't even consider that to be the greatest strength of the video. I have seen many instructors go into detail about the bumps, but will almost immediately lose the skier with too much detail or complex terminology. Not so for Lito, he is the only person I have seen who can explain each detail with such simplicity and yet not foresaking any of the complexities. Many have tried to explain the bumps, but Lito is one of the few who knows how to make it comprehensible to all skiers

4.0 out of 5 stars I love this video. Good job to Lito Tejada. Fellicidades., January 22, 2002

This is the first ski video I ever bought. I liked this video so much that I decided to get the 'BreakThrough On Skis I' as well. I consider myself an intermediate skier. I am fairly good when no bumps and powder are around, although I'm helpless when I have to face bumps and when the slopes start turning challenging. I took a real life lesson on bumps and the instructor was completely worthless. Lito teaches you different levels of bump skiing and tricks to face them. Starting up on smaller ones and moving gradually on to more difficult and challenging ones. With Lito's video you can get a very clear idea of what bumps to attack first, rather than jumping straight into real challenging ones. Now I have a very clear idea of what to do when I have to face this challenging terrain.
