Editorial Reviews

Review

The Conversion and Seasoning of Wood covers the many aspects of timber conversion, detailing the most advantageous methods of cutting to produce the best yield and to preserve the best features of the wood. A full account of the methods of drying timber follows and includes both air and kiln drying, as well as dehumidification, drying defects, and the stabilization of wood. Because of the possibility of a large amount of waste the conversion of timber is a very important subject for the craftsman supplying his own wood. William Brown treats this area very carefully and offers remedies of the many pitfalls encountered in the economic conversion of wood. Subjects covered include the best methods of converting and getting the most from your log; using a chainsaw set-up to convert logs and small trees directly for the user; and how to season your wood and protect it and properly store it. The Conversion and Seasoning of Wood is an excellent book for the farmer, woodworker, or any craftsman involved in the conversion or seasoning of wood. -- Midwest Book Review

4.0 out of 5 stars Good general wood seasoning book, June 1, 2001
By Matt Mulka (Mokena, IL United States) - See all my reviews
This book (which is British) does a good job explaining the basics of drying wood. While it is written for English woodworkers, the tables list common American woods too. I myself have some oak logs to saw up, and I am pleased with their ideas and plan to use many.

4.0 out of 5 stars Biology class, July 26, 2006

This book was way more technical than I though it would be. I'm glad I have a background in Biology, or a lot of this would not have made sense. It is filled with a ton of information and will go beyond the basics for most people.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very informative, September 22, 2007
There's a lot of information in this book. The author not only explains every step of drying/seasoning wood, but explains why in great detail. Just about every aspect of drying/seasoning is backed up with noted research and references. Theres also great instructions on building a solar kiln, which I indent to use.
This is a great read to anyone wishing to convert timber into lumber.

I rated this book at four stars only because it is a bit dated, but still worth every penny...
