Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Walker's three knitting-pattern compendiums (A Treasury of Knitting Patterns, A Second Treasury of Knitting Patterns, and Charted Knitting Designs) have long been considered classics of knitting literature and prime sources of ideas for many knitwear designers. Now they are all back in print, thanks to Schoolhouse. Walker long ago moved on to other interests, but now she has returned with a fourth treasury. This work combines her long-out-of-print Sampler Knitting with a short autobiography and 82 new texture, cable, and lace patterns. Recommended for large public libraries and textile collections in academic libraries.

5.0 out of 5 stars How many knitting pattern books do you need? Well..., November 20, 2002
By Joanna Daneman (Middletown, DE USA) - See all my reviews
(TOP 10 REVIEWER)    (COMMUNITY FORUM 04)
There were three Walker treasuries and now there are four. This book includes the previously-published "Sampler Knitting" and in addition, 82 stitch patterns never published before. Most of these are complicated all-over texture and lace, but there is an attractive textured teddy bear and a lace stitch that looks like a butterfly. The sampler has a lot of intricate cables. Fun for afghans.

While there are many stitch pattern "dictionaries", the Walker series is very large and comprehensive. Knitters who like to design their own knit patterns will appreciate the new material. If you only knit from printed patterns, it's fun to take a standard pattern like a sock cuff and add lace or textured stitches and create something completely new. This is a nice addition to the previous trilogy of Walker stitch patterns and a welcome addition for the avid knitter who likes to design.

1.0 out of 5 stars Fourth Treasury of Knitting Patterns, October 6, 2007
This fourth book in the series was a disappointment. There were some patterns from the previous "Treasuries" and the new patterns seemed to me to be leftovers and not very interesting. I returned the book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Knitting from charts - not for everyone, July 8, 2008
I loved Barbara Walker's volumes I and II Treasury of Knitting Patterns, but I was a little disappointed in the Fourth Treasury of Knitting Patterns. Most of the patterns are worked from charts which are hard for me to see and follow. I think inexperienced knitters would be intimidated by the charts and symbols used to indicate different stitches. Some of the patterns I recognized from her two previous volumes with perhaps a slight variation here and there. My recommendation is to stick with her first two volumes of knitting patterns and pass this one by.

Can't say a negative thing about any of these books. The perfect addition to any knitter's library, especially as you learn to branch out on your own, with unique designs.
