Editorial Reviews

Review

Cupitt challenges us to rethink religion and morality in terms of ordinary, contingent, "outsideless" life. A must-read. -- Thomas Sheehan, Stanford University

Product Description

In modern thinking people have increasingly come to see the world as primarily one of ordinary human life. Don Cupitt argues that we speak of life very much as people used to speak of God: faith in life, what life has in store for us, wrestling with life, etc. In "Life, Life" he has assembled some 250 of these life-idioms. Cupitt mines this database to develop a modern religious philosophy of human life. In it, ethics and stories take the place of traditional supernatural dogma. This fully life-centered religious outlook turns out to be a lively radical theology.

If you want to know what Don Cupitt has been thinking since "After God," his only American book to reach a wide audience, this is a good place to start. He prolificly publishes small tomes which consist of summaries of his recent writings and the next step in the furthering of his thought. It is almost as though the finished book shows him thinking on paper in front of the reader. He takes pains to disclose the book is a work in progress, just like the author. In Cupitt's case this works because the book does reflect the man - brimming with life, aware of all contraries and bursting out of outmoded forms in the search for new meanings of the word "religious."
