Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal
In an ambitious undertaking, Lightbown ( Piero Della Francesca , LJ 7/92) has attempted to encompass all aspects of medieval jewellery in one publication. The text is divided into two parts exploring the business and artistic sides of medieval jewelry-making and ends with 79 color plates and a catalog of jewellery held by the Victoria & Albert Museum in London. The first section covers technical and stylistic developments in the art of goldsmithing and reviews the business side of manufacturing and sales. The second section contains chapters focusing on specific types of ornamentation, often at great depth. The author uses finely detailed descriptions and examples in the text--a scholar's delight, though cumbersome for the general reader. The color plates and black-and-white illustrations throughout are beautiful, but the descriptions of specific pieces leave us wanting more. For larger academic libraries only.

5.0 out of 5 stars Holy Grail of Historic Jewelry Books, July 3, 2008
This is absolutely the most fact filled, informative, interesting and useful book on the subject ever printed. Everyone interested in the history of European jewelry should have a copy of this book. I can't say enough about it. There are many pictures, black & white and color. Get it through interlibrary loan at your local library if you can't afford the hefty price tag. It's an amazing book.
