Editorial Reviews

Review

"An ultimate thriller with the spice of suspense peaking in every chapter-a wonderful portrayal of a frightening scenario at sea." -- Captain Carl Swanson

Product Description

The RMS Queen Mary and her sister ship the Queen Elizabeth were converted to troop carriers during World War II. Known as the Grey Ghosts they came and went with such speed and secrecy that, to watchers from the shore, they would suddenly appear off Staten Island out of a grey fog or, as dawn broke, be swinging at anchor at the Tail o' the Bank on a dull rain swept day--disappearing again just as suddenly. To sink one, or both of these ships was the dream of every U-boat commander, but their speed was no match for these giants of the sea, even given a lucky interception. Either Way Dead is the chronicle of the conception, gestations and birth in the distant and unforgiving waters off Iceland, of Operation Konigin. The target? The pride of the British Merchant Fleet--the Queen Mary.

5.0 out of 5 stars Either Way Dead, August 27, 2001
By John Brown (West Australia) - See all my reviews
Once again Gyles, in this his second novel, leaves the reader wondering howmuich is historical fact and how much is fiction? EITHER WAY DEAD is a must for not only the World Warll. Buff but also for those who like a darn good yarn. Excellent reading with great film potential. John Brown, Editor, ROCKINHAM TELEGRAPH

5.0 out of 5 stars Either Way Dead, August 24, 2001
By Ditta Jevons (Western Australia) - See all my reviews
...As good a read as any. Brilliant Tony Gyles’ successful first novel “Deep Their Grave” told the story of a merchant ship and her crew during the Battle of the Atlantic in 1942. Now Gyles is back with another story about war and the sea. “Either Way Dead” is an exciting tale of patriotism, intrigue, murder and sex brought to life by an author who has a wonderful way of creating scenarios that make the reader feel as being part of the action. Tension and suspense is kept up throughout the book, despite copious technical and nautical terms. There is never a dull moment. “Either Way Dead” is a marvellous read from beginning to end...

5.0 out of 5 stars Suspense, intrigue and imagination by a master storyteller, August 23, 2001
By A Customer
Can this truely be real? Is it a hoax? The author just seems to know too much for this story to be anything but genuine. And yet, success of the plot would have changed history...and the fate of a nation. The author provides an intimate insight into a complex character. His blend of morality and immorality are exactly what is needed for such an undertaking, and we get caught up through the whole adventure. The rememberances of the time are bittersweet and remind us why freedom and democracy must survive. The simplicity of the plan is the key to its possible success. I found this escape to another time to be quite entertaining.
