Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Even those who strive toward a greener world get stymied by what to do next after composting their veggies and recycling their paper, glass, and tin. But Nikki and David Goldbeck have compiled a reference of more than 2,000 resources on more than 200 topics, providing information on how to reduce, reuse, recycle, repair, restore, reclaim, refill, recharge, and resell everything from air filters to zippers. The book itself is printed on recycled paper with vegetable oil-based ink, the ink-jet cartridges were refilled, the copier cartridges remanufactured, and the computer printer and monitor were borrowed.

From Booklist

Well-known authors Nikki and David Goldbeck have turned their attention from food (The Supermarket Handbook) to a timely new topic. In their introduction, they explain that there are two types of "reuse." The first involves the reutilization of an item for the same purpose as it was originally intended; the second involves using the item for a new purpose. Recycling, on the other hand, is reprocessing of an item into raw material to create another new product.

Choose to Reuse is an alphabetical directory of more than 2,000 products, services, and organizations that facilitate the reusing of goods. Entries usually include a brief overview of the item and its impact on the environment. The entry is subdivided into various topics relevant to reuse: resources (where to find the materials); maintenance (how to keep an item in good working condition); repair (how to decide if it is worth fixing); rental sources; remanufacture; used marketplace; when not to reuse; surplus (where to find good items that industry no longer uses); donation; and finally disposal. The book also offers suggestions on what to do with such old items as eyeglasses and offers tips on where to find classroom craft supplies. There is a list of charitable and volunteer organizations that reuse materials. Peppered throughout the book are "choice stories," fascinating accounts of people and businesses that have implemented reuse projects.

This readable, unique guide contains a list of publishers and a short bibliography. A brief topic index and the table of contents provide access. At this price, public and academic libraries of all sizes will want two copies--one to circulate and one for reference.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the Bible of Reuse, 2000 contacts and 200 subjects, July 19, 1998
The amazingly comprehensive encyclopedia "Choose to Reuse" has something for everyone, from a family trying to creatively reuse their household waste to businesses with 1000's of tons of materials to deal with. Every subject has an indepth choice story, lists of green products, non profit experts and organisations with comprehensive contact details. I don't know how they packed so much into a book for so little money. The research must have taken ages. Very amusing in places as well. A real must for anyone interested in the fast growing area of reuse.
