3.0 out of 5 stars Local History from a Woman's Viewpoint, April 8, 2003
By peter knutson (Duvall, WA USA) - See all my reviews
Big Sur Woman began when a Berkeley housewife moved to the Big Sur area and started life alone. As she became more aware of her surroundings, she became more and more fascinated with the way of life (solitary and harsh) of the area and decided to do research in the past lives of female residents. The result is part oral history and part biography. Ranging from the story of a 44-year-old relatively high class Berkeley woman who married a Spanish farmer through letters written by a woman on fire watch to the diary of writer Lillian Bos(Shanagolden)Ross and including photographs, poems and sketches, the book captures the deep sense of harmony many women have felt with this area of the country, from pioneer times to the present.
