Review
"...even readers who don't ride motorcycles, but do enjoy knowing which restaurant serves the best blueberry pancakes on Mt. Desert Island or the best chili in the Berkshires, might like to take a look at Berke's book." May 1992 -- i

"...for those who want to put a little vroom into their vacation. . ." -- Boston Sunday Globe, May 1992

"Berke has written a highly entertaining and fact-crammed book...." -- Rider, October 1992

"Marty Berke sounds like he'd be a great guy to tour with. For those of us who'll probably never get the chance to put wheels to the road with him, however, Berke has written a highly entertaining and fact-crammed book . . . Breezy, humorous and entertaining . . ." -- Jerry Smith for Rider

"Motorcycle Journeys Through New England by Martin C. Berke is a northeast motorcyclists dream. Even in the information age, it's hard to believe the quality and wealth of info in this narrow booklet. . . . The book combines information of interest to motorcyclists with sights of interest to all. Glance at political history in Calvin Coolidge's hometown. Gain some literary insight at Robert Frost's summer get-a-way cabin. Explore the arts with a few interesting roadside sculptures. And of course, experience a wealth of different culinary delight. Martin seems to always find the perfect example of down-east cooking when he pulls into the little roadside shacks that line his out-of-the-way routes.

"From lobsters in Maine to cob-smoked ham in Vermont, there's plenty to feast on. For folks in the tri-state area, it may please you to find that Martin has a broad-based definition of 'New England.' His sojourns not only include southern parts of Connecticut and Rhode Island, but also trips to Lake George and Lake Placid in northern New York State.

"My great-grandparents were Maine apple farmers, so I expected to open this book and be bored by things I already knew. Instead, I was greeted by how much I had missed and a desire to return to the land of my youth. I strongly recommend this book to anyone with two wheels and a love of salt spray and green mountains." -- C.C. Motorcycle Newmagazine, October 1992

"While amazingly comprehensive, Berke modestly concludes that his isn't the last word, noting 'the intent of this book is to get you going, to present choices, and to encourage you to venture on your own.'

"Riders are advised to taste the sheer variety of New England, a land where - on the same day! - you can mosey down from a 6,000 foot mountain peak to the sands of an Atlantic Ocean beach. The forested, sparsely-populated north country has much to offer. It's a constant goad for us mid-Atlantic riders to zip up the Eclipse, compress the air mattress and 'get goin' from here. Motorcycle Journeys provides the extra incentive to make such dreams a reality." -- Motorcycle Times, September 1992

...I strongly recommend this book to anyone with two wheels and a love of salt spray and green mountains." -- C.C. Motorcycle Newmagazine, October 1992

Product Description
Starting in early October, the trees of Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire burst into a brilliance of color. From the top of northern New England's numerous mountains you can see mother nature work her way south leaving patches of red, orange and yellow behind. By month's end, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut have reached their peak, turning the area's twisting roads into paths of autumn gold.

Fall has made it famous, but any season becomes New England, with its haphazard roads, scenic landscapes and traditional architecture. This book is the perfect guide for finding the best the area has to offer. It contains suggestions to lead motorcyclists to their kind of road in six major riding regions: the rugged Maine coast, the high notches of the White Mountains, the lush gaps of the Green Mountains, the lakes region of upstate New York, the rolling Berkshire hills, and the coastal areas of Rhode Island and Connecticut. Altogether, Berke has carefully plotted 19 trips for you, most of them taking one day to complete. Each trip is detailed by means of a map and specific route directions, as well as recommendations for restaurants, diners, roadhouses, places to stay, interesting places to visit and the locations of emergency facilities. In addition, the book contains a listing of all major motorcycle dealerships in New England, in the event you have mechanical trouble on the road.

The trips are designed to accommodate various riding styles, from two-up travelers looking at every nook and cranny, to sport riders chasing more curves than a day's worth of hourglasses. Either way, this book will lead you to great riding and offbeat people and places.

4.0 out of 5 stars must-read material for New England riding, September 1, 1999
By A Customer
With basically one day to plan my trip (so I am a bit last-minute these days), this book was an indespensible boost in the good-time department. It is a great book to get you started, and provides all the necessary clues to create your own journeys. After a couple of days, you get to understand the way the maps illustrate the individual roads, and marty's book helps you identify the best kinds to explore. Sometimes the routes get confusing, but that just adds to the adventure. Makes a great gift, as I told the friend who got it for me.

4.0 out of 5 stars Motorcycle Journeys through New England..., July 9, 2005
By Dodie Smith (Albany, NY USA) - See all my reviews
I purchased it for my husband... he has been reading and enjoying it. It's always good to find those special places to drive, especially since the northeast is so limited in drive time!
