From Booklist
Since the publication of this revised edition of a 1992 title, coauthor Allison has established herself, through seminars and media exposure, as one of the nation's leading stop-smoking gurus. Here she updates her text with recent success stories and with newly available information regarding the addictive power of tobacco. Her program is based on mind control rather than on physical aids, and while much of the advice is inspirational in nature, it is always firmly grounded in logic: admit that you do want to smoke, but you don't want the consequences of smoking. Unlike other inspiration-based programs, however, this one offers practical mental devices to help the smoker get through, first, the withdrawal period and then the ongoing maintenance. There is even some humor: on the idea of advising those who smoke while driving to take public transportation, Allison wryly notes, "Whoever dreamed this up has never waited for a bus." Recommended for all libraries where the first edition is either unavailable or in need of replacement. Ilene Cooper

It teaches smokers who want to quit how to work through their drug dependency step by step and equips them with an arsenal of self-defense skills to disarm their most intense cravings and begin to retrain their minds. Inspiring stories from nine ex-smokers tell how they struggled through withdrawal, learned to face new challenges, and coped with ordinary stress without smoking again.
