Editorial Reviews
Book Description
This is the first thoroughly researched history of the town of Crown King and the surrounding southern Bradshaw Mountains, one of the richest and roughest mining areas in Territorial Arizona. Placer claims were first discovered in the desert to the west of the mountains by a party led by William Bradshaw in 1863. Rich gold and silver strikes were made in the mountains themselves over the next few years, but hostile Indians and rugged, roadless terrain impeded their development. In spite of the difficulties mines such as the Tiger, Peck and Crowned King were developed, and boom towns like Alexandra, Bradshaw City, Moreland City and Crown King sprang up. A railroad was even pushed through the mountains into Crown King in 1904. The mines played out years ago, but Crown King still exists as a tourist destination. Since many of the early buildings still exist, such as the General Store and Saloon, driving into Crown King feels like time traveling into the last century. Includes old photographs and maps.
