Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Permeated with the author's love of cross-country skiing and the winter outdoors of northern Michigan, this comprehensive guide to skiing in that region is complete with maps, historic anecdotes, and recommendations for where to stay, eat, and enjoy the local color. Each chapter covers a certain region and outlines the various Department of Natural Resource trails, National Forest Service trails, National Park Service trails, touring centers, and resorts. A skier can plan an easy, two-hour outing or a back-country, two-week ski journey with this book, which is clearly and concisely written and organized. It also contains an appendix listing local tourist bureaus to write to for help planning one's trip. For regional travel collections.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unpleasant experience, March 20, 2007
By S. Chagas "Edson Chagas" (Canton, MI United States) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
There is very serious mistake in the edition I consulted. The Hanson Hills recreation area map has a NORTH arrow pointing to the SOUTH (page 165). I only figured this out after getting lost in the trail system (end of season and the trails were no longer groomed). I decided to head south "towards" the trail head or the access road only to find out that I was actually heading away from the parking lot and into the wilderness.
My luck was that it was not snowing hard so my tracks were still visible for me to backtrack once I relized the mistake. I got to my car after 4 hours of hard skiing in dark conditions, not a single soul in the park.
I actually like the book and had used before but I find this mistake very disturbing. This is not the kind of mistake that falls in the category of subjectivity, as in rating some trails advanced or easy. North is North.
I understand the disclaimer in the book "...know your limitations" but this is such a basic and vital piece of information that, in my opinion, the book should be recalled before someone gets seriously injured or worse.
Hopefully the author and editors will revise this for future editions and be more diligent in checking the information provided.
Edson Chagas
