Editorial Reviews

Review

A one of a kind book that is a "must have" for anyone contemplating starting a doula service. One of the most complete how-to manuals I have ever read. -- Crystal Sada, C.N.A., C.D. Helping Hand Doula Service

By reading this book you will learn exactly what you need to know to make optimal labor support and gifts of health that are the result of mothering the mother a reality in your community. Few endeavors in life hold the potential to positively affect the lives of so many. -- Christiane Northrup. M.D>. author of Womens's Bodies, Women's Wisdom

The road to change in maternity care is always a thorny one, as those who have traveled it know well. Caregivers in the field will therefore welcome the practical,hands-on manual, Doula Programs, written by monitrice Paulina Perez and childbirth educator Deaun Thelen. In clear and down-to-earth language, they describe the nitty-gritty of how to start and integrate a doula program into the maternity services in a community.

Doula Programs fills an important gap in the literature. With this how-to-do-it manual, Perez and Thelen provide valuable strategies and solutions for anyone who wants to implement a doula program or, for that matter, any other new program in the hospital. As they point out in their introduction, "Change is neccessary to keep maternity care vibrant and growing. Remember that a turtle can't move if it doesn't stick its neck out." By combining advocacy and activism, this book contributes importantly to movement and progress in maternity services. -- Birth

5.0 out of 5 stars A doula necessity, August 14, 2000
By B. L. Dinger (Baltimore, MD USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Anyone starting out as a doula needs to have this book in her library! There is easy quick-to-find information that will help keep the business aspect of doula-ing well in hand. Many training workshops help a doula understand her role at birth but not many help with the practical aspects of developing a career. Perez and Thelen fill all those blanks and answer practical questions you may not have even thought of! An EXCELLENT labor assistant's resource!

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for doula businesses and hospital based programs, November 8, 2002
By Connie Banack (Alberta Canada) - See all my reviews
I have used and recommended this book for years. Doula Programs is an excellent resource for doulas starting out in their own practices. But where the value lies I have found is in it's information about starting and maintaining a hospital based doula program. Any doula or hospital looking for solid business information needs this book.

This book is strictly for doula's who are looking for a step-by-step reference for running a doula business. It's loaded with tons of helpful information to guide you through each step of establishing your own doula business. The author made sure to include all aspects of running a business and especially one centered around a pregnant mother and a mother giving birth.
