Grade 2-8?A behind-the-scenes look at competitive riding, this live-action video features Erin Go Bragh, an award-winning Connemara stallion, and his dedicated rider-trainer, Carol Kozlowski, as they prepare for combined training competition, a grueling sport which includes dressage and obstacle jumping. Proper medical care, grooming, and shoeing are discussed and demonstrated by the farrier who makes Go Bragh's shoes and the female veterinarian who monitors his health. An actual three-day competition is the climax. The narration alternates among the various persons associated with Go Bragh's care and training and the horse's first-person "narration." This combined approach effectively supplies information about competition, equipment and training, but at times the horse's view becomes cute anthropomorphism and the documentary aspects are weakened. Nevertheless, the narrator supplying Go Bragh's words has a clear, pleasant voice, and his Irish dialect fits the Connemara breed's origin. The background music is sprightly Irish folk music which fits the rhythmic stride of this powerfully beautiful animal. The strongest portions of the video are those involving the actual competition and the sheer beauty and precision of the horse-rider team. Closeups are used effectively to suggest this relationship as well as Kozlowski's respect and affection for her horse. The distance shots heighten the excitement and athletic exertions of both horse and rider. Teachers and librarians seeking resources on unusual sports or occupations will find this video an entertaining addition; horse-lovers of all ages will enjoy the action sequences.

Midwest Book Review
Young viewers will thrill to the real life story of Erin Go Bragh, the little horse with the big heart, and Carol Kozlowski who trains and competes him. Carol takes the viewer behind the scenes to see all that is involved in the caring for and training of a champion horse. A special treat is hearing Erin Go Gragh help tell his own story in a delightful Irish brogue and see what it's like for him to get shoes nailed on is feet and how he puts up with a bath and having his mane braided because Carol wants him to look his best. The Little Horse That Could is filled with life-lessons in courage, competition and determination. The Little Horse That Could is a splendid, highly recommended addition to any horse lover's collection.
