Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Wing, a Lifetime Award winner from the Stereoscopic Society of America, makes use of his 50 years of fascination and study to give a thorough review of that staple of the Victorian parlor, the stereoscope. Though much has been written on stereoscopic images and photography, Wing focuses on the viewing device itself and its cousins, daguerreotype viewing cases, stereographoscopes, and taxiphotes. Wing traces the stereoscope's history from early beginnings in France and Sir Charles Wheatstone's coining of the name in 1850s England to its great popularity in the United States from the 1860s to the 1940s. The variety of the devices built for the consumer is very impressive, ranging from the single hand-held viewer to elaborately formed wooden tabletop models. Though slightly technical at times, the book covers all of the noted inventors, includes an appendix with patent numbers for collectors, and supplements the text with 700 photographs, engravings, patent drawings, and period advertisements. Recommended for larger photography and antique collections.?Joseph C. Hewgley, Nashville P.L.
