Review

Flying The Big Birds by Sylvia J. Otypka, a 747-400 pilot for United Airlines, is everything a career guidance publication for future airline pilots ought to be. It's concise, getting right to the point without challenging a reader's attention span with needless sidetracking or story telling. The tone is casual, more like a conversation with a friend than a lecture, but the language is direct and no-nonsense, It is simple enough to be understood by a neophyte to aviation, while sufficiently detailed to hold the attention of older, more experienced pilots. -- Captain J. E. Harper, United Airlines, April 1997

Flying The Big Birds is an excellent, informative guide for anyone aspiring to a career in aviation. The author knows her subject and has provided a concise overview of available options. The list of resources will be helpful as you pursue your goals. Aviation can be a rewarding and challenging career. Aim high and make your dream a reality! -- Dr. David R. Williams, Astronaut, commercial pilot

I am happy to see a book such as this finally hit the market. There are not enough books like Flying The Big Birds which provide useful advice about how to enter the aviation field. What I like most about the book is its readability and its practicality for young adults. This book will provide a helpful foundation for any beginning pilot, as well as excellent resource material for pilots with a few ratings and questions about what to do next. As Ms. Otypka notes, it is a worthy goal indeed to find a career where in you get paid to have this much fun. Happy aviating! -- Dr. Dave A. NewMyer, Department Chair Aviation Management &

Many pilots have thought about flying jets, but they may not pursue this thought because they don't know where to begin. Author Sylvia J. 5.0 out of 5 stars Solid advice for those considering an airline career, May 19, 1998
By A Customer
It is one of the best books available from one who has dedicated years of effort to getting ahead as a pilot. Otypka will soon advance to captain, and has still found time to update the book to include topics never taught at a typical flight school, such as crew resource management.

4.0 out of 5 stars My review, May 31, 2001
By A Customer
This book is a good, concise book on the how-tos to become a pilot. My only major complaint is that it is a little old (a few years). Other than that, the author does a good job of describing the life of a pilot, how to get there and what to expect although not in any explicit detail. Good to have if you're an aspiring pilot like me. It sheds a lot of light onto the profession.

5.0 out of 5 stars Flying the Big Birds: On Becoming An Airline Pilot, April 10, 2000
By Jeff Nikolaisen (Coon Rapids, MN) - See all my reviews
Ms. Otypka wrote an amazing book! It helped me choose a path to the majors. Anyone who is thinking of flying as a career should read this book before they make any decision because it helped to steer me on the correct path. The wait is well worth it.

Not an extremely in depth book, but this book was very good at describing a lot of the things that many aviation books take for granted that the reader already knows. Read more
