Editorial Reviews

Review

"...a great addition to our school system's teacher resources. Clear, concise, common sense and appropriate for today's students. Many of our principals are making it mandatory that their teachers read this." -- Jean Gaissert, LPC, Student Assistance Program Facilitator, Clayton County Public Schools, GA

"For me, pages 102-105 about identifying a child's strengths are worth the price of admission all by themselves-but that happens again and again in this book full of great wisdom. Joyce Divinyi's views on choice and consequences are wonderfully useful and smart. -- Gavin de Becker, Bestselling author of The Gift of Fear and Protecting the Gift

"Joyce Divinyi has answers that really work for today's kids who are often times "saddled" with problems of unbelievable proportions with firmness and love. I appreciate Joyce's approach of dealing with these kids." -- Sandra Kidd, Assistant Principal, Fayette County Schools, Georgia

"Joyce has a rare understanding of the complexities of child behavior management. It is very easy to take a harsh and discipline approach, but it is more effective to be creative. I found the book very readable, practical and creative." -- Jeff Turley, M.D., Board Certified Child, Adolescent and Adult Psychiatrist

4.0 out of 5 stars Sound and to the point, November 20, 1998
By Colleen M. McDonald (Rockford, IL United States) - See all my reviews
A seal on the cover of this book advertises, "Parents or Professionals: Step by Step Help for the Discipline Resistant Child." A fairly good description of the contents. The book was written by a therapist with experience in residential treatment programs. Its language and presentation make it accessible to the "lay person," though I think the book is more geared for professionals. The emphasis is on strategies for handling youngsters who are angry and defiant, though there is also information on self-care as a part of coping. There is also a short section on ADHD and an appendix on suicide. The advice in this book is not earthshaking, but I found it to be practical and realistic. I read it from the perspective of being a foster parent and found it helpful in that regard.

5.0 out of 5 stars Successful Strategiesk for Working with Difficult Kids, April 10, 2000
By David McKoy (Acworth, Georgia) - See all my reviews
This is a 5 Star book. Until I read this book I throught that I was the only one that believed in holding kids accountable for their actions. The same strategies outlined in this book worked for me the 22 years I spent in the Marine Corps. I can't begin to count the times that I've had young people come back an tell me that the strategies I used in working with them was just what they needed, it makes them think before they act. If you use the strategies outlined in this book, you will not go wrong. And the best part is that the kids will come back and thank you later for helping turn their lives around.

Thank You Again, Joyce for putting it into simple, easy to use strategies, as well as common sense.

Semper Fi!
