Editorial Reviews

Review

"Those who administer firearms programs for law enforcement agencies will find this book an excellent foundation for departmental guidelines or standard operating procedures." --- James Kielland, The New Gun Week, February 1998 -- James Kielland, The New Gun Week, February 1998

Product Description

The Farnam Method of Defensive Shotgun and Rifle Shooting is filled with vital, gritty - yet seldom discussed - facts as only Farnam can present them. This is no comic-book kiddy text or coffee-table fluff. If you want to be a competent and knowledgeable defensive shotgun or rifle owner, this book belongs on your bookshelf! The Farnam Method of Defensive Shotgun and Rifle Shooting is the first book of its kind which explains the details of the defensive use of the shotgun and rifle and shows you exactly how each critical goal is achieved.

This is John S. Farnam's third book on the subject of defensive shooting and was written for both civilians and law enforcement officers who rely on shotguns and/or rifles for defense. Mr. Farnam is an internationally recognized firearms instructor who teaches the latest defensive techniques to police departments, federal and state agencies and foreign governments.

5.0 out of 5 stars The right way to defend yourself with a rifle or shotgun., July 30, 1998
By A Customer
John covers all the topics - weapon selection, administrative procedures, tactical procedures, safe carry and storage and an in-depth look at practical ballistics.

John's advice is concise and practical - the kind of advice that saves lives. His procedures are precise, practical, appropriate for the average shooter, yet appear to be well tested in actual practice. This sets him and this book apart from the rest of the pack of theorists with fancy but unproven tactics.

I especially liked his recommendations of simple, easy to use weapons and accessories. Many of the doodads and frills on the market today are clunky, cumbersome and, in a defensive situation, unnecessary to the point of being hazardous. His choices may not be high-tech, neato stuff, but they seem to work and work well.

The ballistics section contains more than I ever wanted to know about maximum point blank range, etc.A quick overview suited me just fine but others who want an in depth look with defi! nitely find it there.

One of John's points of focus is safety and his weapons handling procedures emphasize this repeatedly. Each procedure seems refined and distilled with no extra movements or distractions. When I tried these myself they seemed quite natural and easy to follow.

John presents a compelling case for the defensive use of rifles and shotguns. It is clear that, when put into practice, John's recommendations and procedures would enable one to better defend themselves.

I liked it.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fine book on defensive rifle and shotgun fundamentals., August 23, 1999
By A Customer
This book is a very good exploration of the basics of chosing and using rifles and shotguns for defense. The coverage of suggested equipment is obviously from the perspective of one who knows first hand what works and what does not in real world defensive scenarios.

Farnam keeps the material simple enough for the novice, yet insightful enough for even those well read in "tactical" writings.

This book is not so much a "how to" of defensive shooting tactics, but more of a discussion of the equipment, accessories, ammunition and handling associated with defensive long arms.

I recommend this book to anyone who keeps -- or is considering obtaining -- a rifle or shotgun for personal protection or home defense.

4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best of the breed, September 3, 2003
By R. P. Firriolo (Lower Hudson Valley, NY) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Farnam's texts on defensive rifle and shotgun shooting are among the best available resources on the subject. The subject matter is covered in comprehensive fashion, with a fine attention to detail of the truly important aspects of defensive long gun handling and operation. While no substitute for taking one of Farnam's classes, this book can provide a sound foundation for the beginner and give even those with advanced defensive training several things to think about.

The only reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is that the book is slightly (but only slightly) dated in some regards and could use a revised edition, or an updated introduction or appendix to reflect on developments in firearms, ammunition, accessories, etc. since the original writing. Still, the book as-is is well worth the purchase price -- and then some.
