Product Description

Remember when train engines belched steam as they thundered over the rails? Or when milk was delivered fresh with cream rising to the top? Or when the local drugstore dispensed ice cream sodas along with prescriptions? Recapture the people, places and things of yesteryear in REMEMBER WHEN, a WHYY production.

Hosted by veteran actor Mickey Rooney, REMEMBER WHEN recalls Burma Shave road signs, home delivery and Fuller Brush salesmen, World War II on the home front, drive-in movie theaters, Norman Rockwell's Saturday Evening Post covers, cars of the 1950s, drugstore soda fountains and The Howdy Doody Show.

This one-hour documentary visits a Wisconsin town where glass bottles of fresh milk are still delivered to doorsteps; takes a ride on two of the nation's oldest steam trains; traces the roots of the now endangered drive-in movie theater; and more. REMEMBER WHEN presents poignant interviews and archival footage to recreate the nation's bygone days.

5.0 out of 5 stars I like nostalgia, and this has it, April 10, 2003

This review is from: Remember When... A Sentimental Journey Back In Time [VHS] (VHS Tape)
This documentary harkens back to bygone days. I suppose if you aren't interested in the pop culture and history of America in the middle of the 20th Century, this could seem a little old fashioned and slow. If you are old enough to remember "Burma Shave" highway signs then this documentary is for you. What a wonderful way to spend an hour, and remember what is was like when the milkman delivered to your door. Life today seems so fast paced and hectic that we've forgotten or never experienced life in at a slower, more trusting pace. If you want to see a slice of what life was like before WWII then take a look at this program.

I think older Americans will feel a tinge of familiarity in this program and younger folks will get a window into the past lives of our older relatives. This captures a slice of the past for us to imagine again what is was like or for for the younger set, a chance to imagine for the first time, how life used to be.

5.0 out of 5 stars Nastolgic for a time I wasn't even a part of, November 12, 2007

I really like this video, and so did my Grandmother and Dad, who were a part of that era. I didn't find anything boring about it. Even my young kids like it. I guess it depends on what you usually find entertaining. If you like loud raucus videos, this isn't your video. The cover I have is different than the cover on the Amazon page. I actually like the one I have better.

This video mainly consists of interviews with people who were "there", re-enactments, and old footage, with Mickey Rooney narrating.

Boy Mickey Rooney looks different than his younger days. He was right for the job here.

I was so disappointed with this program that I threw it away. I thought that my parents would really enjoy it and it could not have been more boring. Also, for some reason, the outside of the box doesn't look like what is on the screen. I don't understand why.
