Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review
Low-carbohydrate cookbooks are everywhere. Among the favorites is Lauri's Low-Carb Cookbook, a self-published effort that provides almost 200 recipes for a wide range of foods with fewer than 10 grams of carbohydrates per serving. The book's popularity may have to do with its pitch-perfect appeal; it offers everyday recipes for the dishes many Americans love to eat--barbecued ribs, jerk chicken, and chocolate mousse among them. If these recipes adapt food traditions with a very free hand (Lauri's béarnaise sauce calls for sour cream), and require chemical food substitutes (artificial sweeteners, which can appear in recipes that are usually sugar-free), they are also easy to do and fully satisfying. The recipes range from breakfast, snack, and salad items to the usual entrees, sauces, and desserts; winners include the recipes for crab chowder and salmon poached with ginger. Readers should be aware, however, that the recipes have not received editorial scrutiny. As a result, there are errors that range from the embarrassing but not dire (Lauri neglects to tell readers to cook the bacon before using it in her eggs benedict) to the frustrating (Baked Artichoke Savories neglects to mention to bake the savories and for how long). Still, all but novice cooks should be able to fill in the blanks where necessary, and everyone should be pleased with the book's easy low-carbohydrate dishes. --Arthur Boehm

Product Description
Over 230 delicious recipes and each are less than 10 grams carbohydrates per serving! Lauri's Low-Carb Cookbook contains a large variety of cooking styles with both easy recipes and those that cater to a gourmet.

This wonderful collection of recipes will be your constant companion in the kitchen to support your low-carb diet. These recipes were designed specifically for the Dr. Atkins' diet, yet they are great for any type of low-carb diet including, Protein Power, Sugar Busters, the Carbohydrate Addict's Diet, etc.

The first edition of Lauri's Low-Carb Cookbook was a limited edition to test the market demand for such a cookbook. Due to its overwhelming success and some great suggestions from readers, Lauri has completely revised the cookbook, including a new easy-to-read recipe format, correcting typographical errors, many new recipes, additional nutritional information, a new paperback binding which lays , and so on.

More than 50 new recipes have been added including a section of Vegetarian Main Dishes. The "Helpful Hints" section has also been expanded, responding to frequently asked questions to the author from dieters new to the low-carb program. A section on Menu Planning & Shopping List has also been added.

Each recipe now includes a per serving analysis of calories, fat and protein, in addition to the grams of carbohydrates. Although this supplementary nutritional information is not necessary for those on the Dr. Atkins' Diet, it could be useful for those on the many other variations of a low-carb diet. The calculations for the nutritional analysis are based on United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) publications with some additional information obtained from food manufacturers.

Benefits of a Low-Carb Diet & Life-Style:
1. Rapid Weight Loss
2. More Energy
3. No Hunger
4. Satisfying Meals
5. Lower Cholesterol
6. Healthier Heart

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast, fantastic recipes with everyday foods!, February 29, 2000
By Tom (Tennessee) - See all my reviews
Without going into too many details, let me just say that THIS COOKBOOK is the only reason my wife and I are still on the Atkins diet. We bought four cookbooks (all highly recommended), only to find that, while providing tasty recipes, three of the cookbooks asked for all manner of "fancy" ingredients. Stuff not normally found in our "average" kitchen. Expensive stuff. And many of the recipes weren't quite as low-carb as we had hoped (20g for one serving?).

Lauri's cookbook took care of those problems. I think the only "fancy" ingredients we had problems with were Kitchen Bouquet (it was in the gravy section at the store) and shallots (never had one before). The rest is just plain, everyday ingredients. And low-carb? All of her recipes list the nutritional information right there. It's nice to eat a large, tasty dinner with only 2.3g per serving! Most of the recipes are below 10g, and many are below 5g. Serving size is very generous.

I consider this book to be the best diet/way-of-eating investment I've made so far. This cookbook is just too good to pass up.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Favorite Low Carb Cookbook, December 30, 1999
By A Customer
This is my favorite low carb cookbook! I started the Atkins diet in August and lost 20 lbs in 5 weeks! But then I stopped losing because I started cheating - the diet was just way too boring for me. I'm not a very imaginitive cook and found myself eating the same few things over and over again. Then I went out and bought every low carb cookbook that I could find. Lauri's Low-Carb Coookbook is my favorite by far! I use it the most because for the most part the recipes are easy and tasty. I've even come up with some of my own variations based on Lauri's recipes. I am now losing weight again. I have a lot of variation in my diet thanks to Lauri's Low-Carb Cookbook and I know that variation is the key to success.

5.0 out of 5 stars My Constant Companion in the Kitchen, March 1, 2000
By Rick (Dallas, Texas) - See all my reviews
Last year I watched a co-worker totally transform herself on the Atkins diet. So I went out and bought Dr. Atkins' book and cookbook, but didn't start the diet until the first of this year. The induction period (the first 2 weeks) were not too bad, I mostly lived on T-bone steaks, but the next 2 weeks were disasterous! To me, cooking is "throw it on the grill" or "pop it in the microwave". After the induction period, I was tired of steaks and so I gave my best shot at Dr. Atkins' recipes. Each night I sat down to what can not be called a meal. After a few bites, it usually got tossed into the trash and I would drive off to McDonald's or some other place not in keeping with the diet. Then the next morning I would vow to try again. I not only gained the 11 lbs I lost during the induction period I gained a few extra bonus pounds.

Not to be defeated, I talked to my co-worker and she told me about "Lauri's Low-Carb Cookbook" and I bought it immediately. She was right, there are plenty of simple and yummy recipes! I'm now back on track. In February, I not only lost 16 lbs but I'm also learning how to cook! Just as the cover says, Lauri's Low-Carb Cookbook is my constant companion in the kitchen. Thank you Lauri, for some simple and tasty recipes. Soon, I might even try some of the more challenging recipes.

If you too are "cooking-impaired" but want to lose weight on a low-carb diet, then this is the cookbook for you - I guarantee!
