A special ed teacher's #1 pick!, July 1, 2004
I am a special education teacher and just finished my Masters degree in special education, learning disabilities. I have seen a variety of materials and resources out there to assist students with special needs. I find that techniques and methods used for my students also benefit the non-disabled students. However it is not enough to buy the latest crazed method or item. To truly benefit children, it must be research based with evidence of it's effectiveness.Let me tell you, this book is amazing! The thing I like the most is that research backs up teaching young children sign language. There have been numerous studies published in prestigous journals that provide evidence that children who are delayed in language can improve their oral language by learning nonverbal communication systems (www.asha.org, 2004). This can only benefit children who acquire language at a normal rate. I started teaching my baby girl sign language at 8 months. Little did I know that at 2 years old, she would be delayed in her language ability. She uses her signs to express what she wants along with her words. I wish I had this book back then! The signs are fun, functional and occur in everyday life. The music is outstanding..you hear a WIDE variety... from calypso, country to even an elvis type singer. The songs make you want to get up and move. They teach children how to communciate their needs in a fun way...how to ask for more food, types of foods, types of animals, getting hurt, body parts, transportation and asking for a diaper change! Some of the songs are really funny..like the elvis one. You won't get burnt out on this one...it has 20 different songs! The book provides the lyrics and examples of the signs used in the songs. It's really easy to follow and understand, even if you have no background in sign language. I would HIGHLY recommend this book/CD to every family. You never know, your child might really need it later down the line if you find them delayed in their language. Enjoy!!
