5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful and inspiring film about this great poet., July 21, 1999

RUMI: Poet of the Heart "Not since the popularity of "The Prophet," by Kahil Gibran has a poet made such a dent in American popular culture." - The New York Times

RUMI: Poet of the Heart is a one hour film that explores the mystery of why the bestselling poet in America is the 13th century Persian mystic, Jelaluddin Rumi. Narrated by Debra Winger and beautifully filmed and edited, this documentary features lively conversation and readings by preeminent Rumi translator Coleman Barks. Joining Coleman are poet Robert Bly, author Deepak Chopra, storyteller Michael Meade, and religious historian Huston Smith. Exhilarating musical performances by oud virtuoso Hamza El Din and singer Jai Uttal. This is a great introduction to this popular poet's work. Very moving.

5.0 out of 5 stars moving west, December 14, 2002
By A Customer
Even though most of the film contains Coleman Barks' translations this is overall a very good film about one of the most spiritual of writers. There are numerous translations or Rumi but what is important is the "message" that is conveyed. By reading Rumi, Khayam, and Hafez, in their original tongue the reader will hear the poets words, but this does not guarantee understanding. With a little luck one can view this film and "move" into the room and "hear" the "message."

5.0 out of 5 stars beautiful tribute to Rumi......., August 9, 2007
Rumi truly is a poet of the heart. The late, great Persian poet writes prose that truly stirs your emotions and touches your soul. This beautiful film narrated by Debra Winger features some of Rumi's greatest fans (including Deepak Chopra and Robert Frost), readings of some of his most-loved works and beautiful oud accompaniment played by the great virtuouso Hamza Al Din. I love the meditative atmosphere of this piece and it really moved me. I reccomend RUMI: POET OF THE HEART to great fans of Rumi, as well people who have never heard of him before. This is a great introduction to the mood and sentiment of his works and shows the range of emotions he captured in his writing.
