4.0 out of 5 stars A good mystery, May 9, 2000
By A Customer
Well, I'm a guy, so the biggest mistake I think Ms. Harris makes is in allowing her novel to be billed as a Romance Mystery. A guy (myself included) reads that, and figures "chick book" right away. I found this not to be the case.

It takes only a short time for this book to grab hold of the reader, and by the time I was about half-way through, it became one of those books that I had to finish before I could get on with the rest of my life. The chapters are short enough to keep the book moving, and be concise, but not so short as to become confusing and annoying (yes, I'm talking about Tom Clancy here).

I recommend the book to anyone wanting a good easy-to-read mystery, with believable, likable characters, but not heavy on the "romance". Good work, Ms. Harris--I look forward to reading another.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Captain's Fund, February 3, 2000
By Dusti Hammons (Lodi, CA United States) - See all my reviews
Raina - Book was excellent! Kept my interest the whole time; I couldn't put it down. I have encouraged other people to read it as well. The story moves at a quick pace without lacking detail. I can't wait until "Smoldering" comes out!

4.0 out of 5 stars A refreshing work of romantic suspense, December 12, 1999
Nathan and Jennifer Palmer are enjoying a romantic holiday on St. Maarten when they spot a drifting boat with no one on it. They swim to the boat and go on board, but find no registry or log. They do spot a small book. The Palmers are unaware that an evil person has watched them and that malevolent being believes they took something that belongs to him. He kills Nathan and hospitalizes Jennifer after beating them in an attempt to make them reveal where they hid what he wants.

Massachusetts State Police Officer Scott McKay is assigned to help the local police force. His old partner Rod Williams is on the island, grieving the loss of his wife and his father. M.C. Burke also happens to be at St. Maarten checking into a rumor that diamonds were being smuggled into his family jewelry store. These three people meet for the first time and a friendship forms as well as a collaboration to find the link between Nathan's murder and the diamonds.

THE CAPTAIN'S FUND is a romantic mystery that is fun to read. The glamour of St. Maarten is described in loving detail. The interesting mystery is complex enough to hold audience attention throughout the tale. Raina Wissing Harris proves she is a talented writer, especially when she describes the atmosphere of an American cop working in a foreign country. This touch adds credibility to a refreshing romantic suspense that is worth reading.
