5.0 out of 5 stars A valuable new tool for young trichotillomania sufferers., February 22, 2001
By Fred Penzel, Ph.D., Psychlogist, executive di... (Huntington, New York, United States) - See all my reviews
At long last, a self-help book for young trichotillomania sufferers - one that is written in plain common-sense language and that allows each user to tailor the program to his or her own needs. The information is highly accessible to children, and is based upon the latest understandings of this serious disorder. As a member of the Science Advisory Board of the Trichotillomania Learning Center (a national organization for sufferers and professionals), I recommend this valuable workbook without hesitation, not only to my younger patients, but to parents and therapists as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very helpful for pullers of all ages, May 16, 2000
By A Customer
Excellent behavior modification resource for pullers of all ages. While the format of the workbook is geared toward children and adolescents, the underlying principles and techniques used in the book will help all pullers. The authors identify 6 main reasons we pull, then lead us through exercises in which the puller identifies their particular triggers related to each of those 6 reasons, and tailors a program that addresses their own unique pulling patterns. For example, what situations or environments do you pull in? Are you aware or unaware when you are pulling? Does a need to fiddle or to have something in your mouth play a part in your pulling? The book helps you identify you patterns and gives concrete suggestions on how to deal with them. The authors are very understanding and compassionate.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful book and a terrific resource, November 19, 1999
By A Customer
To the authors: I have read The Hair Pulling Habit and You and I love it! It is the perfect resource for adolescents with trichotillomania.Their parents will also benefit from reading it, as will adults who are struggling against the hair-pulling habit. It is amazing that you were able to take something as complicated as behavior therapy for trichotillomania and make it so reader-friendly. Clearly, this manual will become THE resource not only for patients, but also for the clinicians and therapists who treat them.

One of the most helpful aspects of the manual is that it guides the reader through the steps of problem assessment, treatment, and maintenance in a low-key, logical manner. Teens won't be scared off by the enormity of the task, because you've broken it down into manageable sized, "puzzle" pieces. Both the illustrations and the text are appealing. Taken all together, it's a wonderful book and a terrific resource. I'm sure that I'm not the only one who will love it!
